Hard to believe that such a huge swath of land could lie fallow inside New York city throughout the entire 20th century, but not until the turn of the millennium did mankind suddenly appear to discover this last great urban wilderness. Perhaps that is not the greatest development, no pun intended. When I first noticed the activity, I thought they were either clearing brush to prevent fires, or maybe even developing the long awaited bulk of the mirage-like Gateway Park, but signs have sprouted near Starrett City since I shot these indicated that some kind of building complex is going up. I do not yet know the nature of that construction. |
The greenery returns for just a
moment before the ramp for Exit 14 appears. Just past the hump,
we enter Starrett City in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Shot 6/2001. UPDATE 2003: The above construction site is now Gateway Shopping Center, served by new exit 15 and the new Erskine Street overpass. |
