Belt Pkwy Passing Under LIRR

The Belt Pkwy eastbound, takes a sudden lurch to the north at Sunrise Hwy, passing beneath the southern branch of the Long Island Railroad.
It emerges on the other side as the Laurelton Pkwy. The Laurelton was actually just as much the Belt, as the Belt. The part of the Belt known as "The Belt", running west from here to the Gowanus Expwy in Brooklyn, was actually subnamed Shore Pkwy. Along with the Laurelton, Cross Island and the pre-expressway Gowanus, these individual parkways made up the Belt system, originally planned as a Circumferential network to ring Brooklyn & Queens.
Somehow, everyone got used to considering the Shore section as thee Belt. Apparently, the city has long ago given up on trying to keep the Shore name alive. Although you'll see it on maps, all signs pointing to it, refer to it as the Belt.
