The Belt Pkwy passes over the only one, of several inlets
between Canarsie & Sheepshead Bay, to merit a drawbridge.
To most New Yorkers, the Mill Basin Drawbridge is just a landmark,
referred to by radio traffic reporters during the rush hour. Few
have, or ever will, suffer the pain of getting stuck behind it
while it's open. Most probably assume that it never opens.
I know better. I must've set a record for getting stuck behind
it. I must be closing in on 10 times, although since moving to
Queens after many years in Brooklyn, I rarely have to be on this
parkway anymore.
This bridge wouldn't even let me photograph it in peace. A tick
managed to latch onto my head, while I was trudging the brush
surrounding the bridge, looking for a good angle to shoot.
