Two views of the Belt in South Ozone Park from the Lefferts Blvd. overpass, just northwest of JFK Airport and a few blocks east of Aqueduct Raceway. It's a late October 1999 Friday afternoon, yet all the traffic is heading the wrong way, back towards Brooklyn and Manhattan to the west! What is going on here? Maybe they were all originally heading east for the Van Wyck, but became so disgusted with that highway's interminable northbound delays, that they all gave up en masse on ever getting home again and decided to go back to work. The top view faces east, the bottom west. The lanes to the far left in the westbound view are carrying South Conduit Avenue/Blvd/Whatever and will soon provide abundant and redundant access to the Belt, having first passed under the Nassau Expwy and the eastbound Belt's exit for that expressway. |
