Memorial Day

By John A. Wilson

I know that to you, it’s just another day.

But to me it’s a day of memories and pain.

I have given up hope of you ever understanding

And just saying a kind word to me when I need it.

Today you had a good time

With your family and your friends

Cooking out and just being together.

And never once did you think of the reason for the day.

Maybe it’s because you didn’t hold

The hand of a friend as his life slipped away

All for a cause that you can never explain

Or even understand.

But you are free today

To go about your day as you please.

Enjoy your freedom and your way of life.

But for just a moment, can you pause

And remember those who gave their lives

So you could have that freedom.
