Otakon 1999

7/1/1999 – 7/4/1999

Probably the most bizarre weekend. Total intense highs or lows. I was either having a complete and total blast with my friends, or I was on the verge of strangling others. It must be the Baltimore air. Or the shortage of alcohol (besides Jen’s “special” water – consisting of Malibu rum). Either way, the convention was cool (in that strange Tom Petty sort of way)...

This is when the Powerpuff Girls were just starting to take off. I made all three costumes - using semi-sheer lamme tissue fabric. You can’t tell in this picture but they were see-through in the sunlight. Jen was Bubbles (blue), I was Buttercup (green) and Jordi was Blossom (pink).

That’s us again, with Josh in our hotel room. Goofing around as usual. I don’t know how we wore those things as long as we did --- the fabric totally didn’t let us breathe, and it was HOT that day! But we looked cute…so I guess everything else is secondary.

At the risk of sounding obnoxious, we were the best Powerpuff Girls ever! Those costumes rocked! And that’s Paige in her Pikachu costume, which totally blew everyone out of the water. There must have been at least a dozen Pikachus running around that weekend, but Paige’s was by far the best!

This is a great pic of Paige’s Pikachu costume. I love what she did with the boots – that was just beyond cute! But her entire outfit was great! That tail was unbelievably heavy though, and it tugged at her neck (she had a fishing line connected to her collar to keep it up).

Just another picture of “Pikapaige”. Just wanted to also point out how well her yellows match (hahaha). I really love this costume! Sadly I don’t have the ability to pull it off (besides, who would want to follow this act?).

That’s me as just a random Japanese School Girl (just think of me as an “extra”), and Luciana as Nadia. The funny thing about my Japanese School Girl outfit, was that I was hemming that skirt and shirt in the car on my way up to Baltimore (there was traffic). It’s amazing that I got there in one piece. Even more amazing is that my hems are all straight!

I love this costume of Jen’s. She just wanted to wear a cheerleader outfit. HAHAHA!!! What was great were the people that kept asking her what anime she was from. As I said, thank god for the “special water”. *snort*

This is Jen again, as Anthy, and Jordi as Utena. Hahaha...they were just really funny costumes. Jen made her Anthy dress from children’s tutus. But you have to love it. The total bizarreness is so there! It may not be an exact replica of the anime, but the spirit of it is!
