Title: The Canyon
Fade in to
Scene 1
Jill, Debbie, Trisha, Anita, Stuart, and six to eight others are exploring a large valley, using four rubber boats to navigate the medium-sized river running across its floor. Everything is tranquil and tropical. We follow for several minutes with only trivial, ad-libbed dialogue as a tropical shower starts, ends, and starts again. We observe animals grazing on the slopes. We see smiles on faces as the colonists explore an idyllic valley.
After several minutes, we see several members of the group shake rainwater off themselves. It begins to rain harder. They have to work a little harder to paddle the boats. We see a hint of concern in a few faces.
After another minute or so, there is a flash of lightening and the rain becomes torrential. The colonists work harder and harder to paddle and the boats move faster as the river rises. Dialogue is mostly shouting to stay together and not try to fight the river.
For several more minutes we follow as the colonists are swept downstream in a rising flood. They are swept into a canyon with sheer cliffs rising right from the water (as in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado).

Scene 2
The weather is good again. The colonists and their boats have survived and are beached on a sand bar. They are beginning to recover from an exhausting struggle.
Stuart: :"Is everyone okay?"
Others: "Yeah, we're okay, are you?"
Anita: "So much for our idyllic valley....that was quite a ride."
Jill: "The rain wasn't all that hard....It must have been just right....or just wrong....The valley must have focused it it all at once into this gorge."
Debbie: "From the looks of the marks on the walls, it must happen quite often here."
Trisha: "I think we've got some good news and some bad news.
Stuart: "Are you hurt?"
Trisha: "No....we're all okay and so are the boats....that's the good news....but look at the current....there's no way we're going to paddle back upstream in that current."
Debbie: "Damn! You're right!....If the water stays this high we'll have to find another way out of here."
Jill: "Scale the canyon walls?"
Stuart: "Not here....Not without climbing gear, anyway."
Anita: "We could try floating out....just go downstream."
Stuart: "Maybe....we may have no choice....but who knows what is downstream."

The group is forced to go downstream into the unknown canyon. What do
they encounter in the canyon? Waterfalls? Rapids? Hostile, insane pirates?
What is at the other end of the canyon? A volcanic badland? A vast, tractless
swamp? A dessert full of hostile creatures?
