The Lost Safari
Copyright 2000 by Name Withheld (Known to Site Owner)
The ultimate jungle safari movie.
This one may be overdoing it just a bit. Ten people set out on an ill-advised trip down a jungle river. Along the way they have an encounted with three river pirates. One drowns in the river, one diappears from the script without explanation. One at a time the rest all face encounters with the inevitable quicksand, some more than once, but ending grimly for all of them in the end.
This script is rather long and was revised several times while being written. If you notice mistakes, such as a character appearing in a scene after having sunk in the quicksand, let me know through the page owner and it will be fixed.

Scene 1

A wide angle shot of a primitive water front scene on a jungle river. There is an old African Queen type boat tied at the dock. There are two people aboard the boat – a captain of questionable judgement and a handyman/mechanic. The captain is on the deck and the handyman is below. We zoom in closer as the handyman emerges onto the deck and the captain speaks to him.

Captain: "How’s it coming Clyde?"

Clyde: "She’s runnin" Cap’n. That’s ‘bout all. She’s old…Old."

Captain: "Just patch her up Clyde, that’s all we can do."

Clyde: "Cap’n, that ain’t all…. The hull…. There’s rot…. She just ain’t seaworthy."

Captain: She’s fine Clyde. The hull’s had rot for years. And I don’t have time to wait. We’ve got to go this afternoon.

Clyde: "Cap’n, she ain’t seaworthy. Go if you must but I ain’t going down river in this. You go, you go without me."

Captain: "Come on Clyde. One more trip.

Clyde: "Captain I ain't going. This boat has had it. It'll break down."

Captain: "Clyde it ain't like we're going into the open sea. You can swim ashore from just about anywhere on the river."

Clyde: "And then what. You know what the jungle is like. If you can't get the boat going again you'll be stranded. And there's nothing out there but pirates, snakes, mosquitos, fire ants, and quicksand. And there's and awful lot of quicksand. You'll have no chance without the boat. No chance at all."

Scene 2

Inside a primitive jail house in the village above the river. Marina, Mara,  and Kata are prisoners inside the jail cell. There is a tired-looking jailer sitting behind an old desk. Mark, a bounty hunter enters through the door.

Mark: "Ah, there you are. I’ve arranged for pace on a boat leaving just after noon. I’ll pick up my two guests a half hour before then. Please have them ready." (Mark turns toward the girls in the cell). " We’ll be going down river in two hours. You’re soon going to get what’s coming to you."

Marina: "We’ll see. You’ll never get us there, bounty-hunter."

Mara: "You'll be the one who gets what's coming. You'll see.

Scene 3

In a very sleazy-looking bar. Roana is seated at a table in a corner (they are the only customers present). Mina enters through the door and goes up to her.

Mina: "The boat captain says his engine is fixed. We leave just after noon.

Roanna: "Good. Let’s get out of this stinking jungle."

Mina: "You liked it well enough two months ago. I guess I did too, but now that we’ve got the diamonds, I do notice the jungle’s smell a bit more."

Roana: "Ssshhhhhhh! Careful, we’ll be over heard."

Mina: (looking around at the empty bar) "By who?"

Scene 4

Back at the boat. Jane and Claire (camera toting tourists) and Jill (gymbag carrying tri-athlete) approach the captain, who is standing on the dock.

Jill: "Captain, we hear you’re headed down river. Can we book passage with you?"

Captain: "Sure! It’s a small boat though. Pretty limited facilities, and its three days on the river… four if the engine acts up again."

Jane: "We understand, but we’re on a tight budget."

Captain: "It’s a hundred and fifty thousand."

Jane: "Fair enough." (she hands the captain some currency).

Jill: "Here’s mine.

Claire: "And mine."

Captain: (Takes the money and boards the boat.) "We leave at noon. Don’t be late." (He leaves the scene.)

Claire: (to Jane) "How much is that in American?"

Jane: "Fifty bucks, more or less."

Scene 5

(At the boat). All but the bounty hunter and prisoners are already aboard. The remaining three now arrive. Marina, Mara, and Kata have their hands handcuffed behind their backs. They climb aboard the boat. The bounty hunter slips as he ascends the gang plank and almost falls into the water.

Marina: "Careful there, bounty hunter."

Kata: "Watch you’re step bounty man, you just might kill yourself before one of us does."

Mark: (fingering the hand cuff key on a chain around his neck) "You’re in no position to make threats girls. Not with you’re hands tied behind your backs."

Mara: "We'll find a way."

Scene 6

A wide angle shot as the boat starts up and pulls away from the dock.

Scene 7

Several inter-cut shots of the boat going down the river from various angles, plus shots of the shoreline passing by. [If available, footage of river animals (as in many old Tarzan movies) can be spliced in also.]

Scene 8

A sunset.

Scene 9

The boat’s deck at night, illuminated by a gasoline lantern.

Scene 10

Several brief shots of various characters watching the river or talking, shots of the water flowing around the hull, and the jungle going by in the darkness. There is no dialogue through all this but the sound of the engine is prominent. Then, suddenly, the engine stops.

Captain: "Damn!"

Others: "What is it? What’s wrong?"

Captain: "Engine trouble. It’ll be all right."

Scene 11

Shot of the inside of the hull, which is leaking water. Suddenly a hole bursts open and water gushes in.

Captain: (unaware of the hole in the hull and off screen) "We’ll just drift with the current until we get close to shore. Then we’ll tie up until daylight."

Scene 12

Shot of the captain as he scans the river ahead as looking for obstructions.

Captain: (to some one off screen) "Don’t worry. This happens all the time. Its hard to get good parts."

Scene 13

Shot of water rushing in through the hole in the hull. Ominous background music. Pan down to water now calf deep on the bottom of the boat.

Scene 14

Shot of the captain again, still scanning ahead. He points to something on the shore ahead.

Captain: "The river curves to the right up ahead. The current will take us to the left shore. We’ll tie up to some trees there."

Scene 15 (Standing near the bow and sounding very alarmed). "Captain, why is the bow down so low in the water?"

Scene 16: Shot of the captain’s face – looking horrified.

Captain: "What?….Shit!"

Scene 17

Close up of the bow now rapidly going down.

Scene 18

Shots of people on the deck falling forward as the boat stops and pitches forward. One or two fall overboard.

Scene 19

Several intercut shots of the boat breaking up and sinking, people falling or jumping overboard, and people swimming. There is no real dialogue, just people calling back and forth, gagging and coughing, and shouting for assistance.

Scene 20

Shot from behind of Kata floating on her back and reaching shore. She rolls over onto her face and is able to stand up, coming ashore through some weeds but encountering no difficulty. No dialogue.

Scene 21

Shot from behind as Jane and Claire reach shore. The move through some thick weeds, first Jane and then Claire. Then they cross a clear area, within which is a patch of quicksand. Jane steps through some ankle-deep mud but avoids the quicksand. Claire stumbles into the quicksand and sinks to her chest. However, she is near the edge and is helped out by Jane. All dialogue is ad-libbed. This scene may be split into two or more segments and intercut with the other scenes of people coming ashore.

Scene 22

Head shot of the captain struggling to swim. He is unable to continue and drowns. No dialogue. This scene may be split into two or more segments and inter-cut with the other scenes of people coming ashore.

Scene 23

Shot from ashore as Marina and Mina stumble ashore. Both start to crawl across a wide bar of thick mud, but they remain horizontal and neither gets stuck.

Scene 24

Shot from ashore as Mara and Kata stumble ashore (as in the previous scene). Both are still handcuffed. Mara comes across the mud bar first, followed by Kata. They walk parallel to each other abuot ten feet apart. The mud beneath them softens and they both plunge in to their waists at about the same time.

Scene 25

Mina and Marina continue to crawl across the mud bar. Mina helps Marina quite a bit as Marina is still handcuffed.

Marina: "Come on, Keep moving. Don't try to stand up."

Scene 26

Mara and Kata struggle in the quicksand but sink rapidly to their chests. Kata is able to make some progress toward solid ground. Mara is able to make similar forward progress but she is further from solid ground.

Mara: "Kata help me. I'm sinking."

Kata: "I'm sinking too. Oh my God. It's quicksand."

Mara: "Oh no, I don't want to die in quicksand. Kata help. Some onem help. Help."

Scene 27

Mina reaches solid ground and laboriously hauls herself out.Marina sinks to her chin in the background.

Marina:: "Mina, Help. I can't last much longer. I'm going under. Heeeellllp!"

Scene 28

Shot of Mara and Kata initially, then zooming in to a head shot of Mara. Mara goes under.

Mara: "Kata, Heeeeellp! No! Oh! Ooooooh! Eeeeeiiiieeee! Uglphgh!"

Scene 29

Shot of Kata, now only a few feet from shore but up to her chin. Kata ad-libs a last second gasp/scream as her face goes under. Roanna's arm now appears in the scene, grasping Mata by the hair and lifting her back above the mire.

Scene 30

Shot from behind as Mina throws a vine to Marina. Marina grabs it as she goes under and is pulled to safety."

Scene 31

Shot from ashore as Mark, Roanna, and Jill get to shore. They struggle through weeds but nothing else. This scene may be split into two or more segments and inter-cut with the other scenes of people coming ashore.

Scene 32

Sunrise

Scene 33

The group (minus the captain and Mara who drowned) is huddled together in a small clearing. All are eating from some tins of food that have washed ashore.

Claire: "Well here we are, lost in the jungle, the captain is dead. What do we do now?"

Jane: "As I see it we have two choices. We can wait here for someone to come along or we can try to walk out of here. If we wait here and the first people to come along are river pirates, we’ll all wish we hadn’t."

Mina: "What are the chances of the first group to find us being pirates."

Mark: "Probably pretty high.

Marina: "You’re just afraid of losing your bounty."

Mark: "Right now I’m more concern with staying alive."

Mina: (Turning to show her bound wrists) "Set us loose then. We promise not to kill you."

Mark: "I'd like to really. But no, the two of you are just too dangerous. Tell you what I'll do. I'll take the cuffs off of you but I'll have to tie your wrists with rope at night."

Marina: (Under her breath) "Bastard!"

Jane: "So we walk out?"

Most everyone: "Agreed. We walk out." Okay."

Marina: "We’d better stay away from the river. If there are pirates on the river they might see us if we’re too close."

Kata: "Besides that the river itself is pretty dangerous."

Claire: "Yeah, I got into some quicksand coming ashore and so did Marina and Mina. And Mara of course didn't make it."

Jane: "Okay, we go inland, but only as far as we can still see the river. If we get lost in the jungle we might never find our way out."

Mark: "Everybody grab whatever you can from the wreck. You never know what might be useful."

Jane: "Agreed, but there isn’t much.

Scene 34

A shot from the clearing as the group starts into the jungle. They leave in single file, led by Jill.  Claire is the last.

Jill: "Come on then, let’s get going! Remember, we’ve got to keep together so don’t lag behind." (Note to actress playing Jane – Jane is being enthusiastic here, she is not nagging the others to get going. However, although she is not being critical of anyone for falling behind (that has not happened yet) as an athlete she is unaware that others do not have the energy to keep up with her.

Scene 35

A low shot from behind some bushes as the group files by. No dialogue, although players are free to ad-lib.

Scene 36

Another shot, this time from the other side, as the group files by. This time there is greater distance between people, especially between Jill and the next in line.

Scene 37

A repeat of scene 36, but this time there is even more distance between people.

Kata: (second in line) "Jill, slow down, we can’t keep up."

Jill: (looking back over her shoulder as she speaks) "Come on, you can keep up. We’ll never get there at this rate."

Scene 38

Shot from the front as Jill approaches the camera, still well in the lead. She looks back over her shoulder to shout to the others)

Jill:"Come on, keep up" (While looking back and shouting she walks straight into a quicksand pit. She sinks quickly past her waist.

Jill: "Oh! What’s this? Oh! Help!"

Scene 39

Shot of the others following, not yet hearing Jill’s cries for help.

Jill: (from a distance) Help me! Help! It’s quicksand! Help!"

(The others finally hear. They call to each other and begin to run more quickly to come to the rescue.)

Scene 40

Shot of Jill now up to her shoulders and sinking fast.

Jill: "Oh! Oh my" Oh! No! Help! Help me! No!"

Scene 41

Shot of the others still coming.

Various players: "What is it? Hang on. We’re coming."

Scene 42

Head and shoulders shot of Jill, now up to her neck. She struggles but continues to sink. She continues to call for help and she sinks to her chin, then to her nose. She calls for help one last time as her face goes under, leaving only her waving arms above the surface. The camera stays on Jill as long as the player can sustain.

Scene 43

Kata and one or two others arrive on the scene and see what has happened. Kata drops down to reach out to Jill.

Scene 44

Kata grabs what is left of Jill’s arm and pulls her back to the surface. The others help by holding Kata in place. Jill comes up gasping and coughing and is pulled out. The other characters arrive on the scene (except Claire) as Jill is pulled out.

All dialogue is ad-libbed.

Scene 45

Jill is half lying on the ground and half sitting up, still breathing heavily but recovering.

Kata: "Jill you’ve got to slow down. We can’t keep up with you. There’s too many dangers out here for us to get separated."

Jill: "Okay. You’re right." (She stands). Why don’t you lead for a while. You set the pace."

Jane: "The most important thing is we all stay together."

Mark: "Speaking of which, where’s your friend."

Jane: "Oh my god… (she turns to look around) "Claire! Claire?"

Kata: "Come on, we’ll backtrack."

Scene 46

High angle shot (45 to 60 degrees, not 90) showing Claire struggling up to her chest in another quicksand pit. A few articles she was carrying are floating in the mud around her.

Claire: "Oh, Help! Heeeelp! Oh Oooohh? Arrrggh"

Scene 47

Quick shot of several characters searching through the jungle, calling for Claire but finding nothing.

Scene 48

The same shot of Claire as in Scene 47. Claire is now up to her neck.

Claire: Ad-libbed expressions of terror, gasping, and choking noises. (Claire sinks to her mouth in the scene.

Scene 49

Change to lower camera angle and close-up of Claire as she goes under.

Scene 50

Kata approaches the edge of the bog where Claire has gone under. She stops in sudden recognition of what has happened.

Kata: "Oh my God. No! Marina! Over here. Jill, Jane.

(The others appear from both sides).

Jane: "Oh no, Claire!"

Marina: (Taking Jane by the shoulder) "Come on, there’s nothing we can do now."

Scene 51

Another passing shot of the remaining characters. This time they are together. The camera pans as the last one passes, revealing that they are in a small clearing. Kata leading, stops.

Kata: "Its getting dark. Why don’t we stop here for the night."

Jill: "Good idea, It’ll be dark soon… We certainly don’t want to be wandering around in the dark out here."

(Everyone spreads out around the outside edge of the clearing, sitting on the ground in preparation for spending the night. Jill moves into the center to speak to everyone.)

Jill: "Listen, everybody. Once it gets dark we need to be very careful. Let's check out the perimeter of the clearing while its still light. Then we need to stay strictly inside the safe area until daylight. There are some bushes with edible fruits over here (pointing) so lets use the area down there (pointing a different way) for a latrine."

Mark: (Starting to rise) "God idea."

(The others start to get up.)

Scene 52

In the clearing. It is full night, although a moon provides some illumination. Everyone is sleeping. Jane awakens. She gets up and quietly moves into the surrounding bushes (toward the latrine). She moves a short way into the jungle and steps behind a thick bush for a few moments.

Fade slowly to black.

Fade slowly in to:

Scene 53

Jane steps back into view and starts to walk back to the clearing. However, she moves in the wrong direction, though she does not realize it. She walks thirty or forty yards (going past the camera several times). She begins looking perplexed, looking right and left. She looks back where she has come from, then left, then right. Now she looks very confused and alarmed, but she begins walking again.

Fade quickly to black.

Fade in to:

Scene 54

Continuation of the above to indicate time passing. Jane nervously continues, changing direction frequently but not attempting to call for help. She is startled by a large spider and pulls back. She moves forward again into an area of very thick plant growth. Suddenly she is startled by a large snake draped over a branch. She screams and bolts in the opposite direction. She gets about two steps and plunges directly into a quicksand pit. [This scene is essentially Vera Miles in Tarzan's Hidden Jungle, but with a grim ending.] She sinks quickly to her chest. She tries lunging across the bog, turns left (blocked by snake), turns right. She sinks to her shoulders.

Jane: "Help! Help! Quicksand! Help me!"

Scene 55

Back at the clearing. The others hear the cries for help but cannot locate the direction at first.

Roanna: (Pointing) "There. Its coming from over there."

Some characters start to run in the direction indicated.

Marina: "Wait. We have to stay together."

Jill: "She's right. We'll get ourselves all killed running around in the dark."

(They now move forward together. They move rapidly but carefully).

Scene 56

Jane gradually sinks from neck-deep to completely under.

Jane: "Heeeeelllllp! Help me! Aaaarrrrrggggh! Glpgh!"

Scene 57

Shot from across the quicksand. The others arrive too late on the scene. Jane's fingers are just disappearing down into the quicksand as they arrive. They all stop short at the edge of the mire, except Roanna, who plunges in to half way up her thighs. She is quickly rescued by the others.

Roanna: (as the plunges in) "Ooooohhh! Shit! Help!"

Jill: "Grabbing Roanna by the arm) "Its okay. I've got you."

Mina: (Grabbing Roanna's other arm.) "Okay, okay. We have you."

Fade to black.

Fade in to:

Scene 58

Back at the clearing. The group is arranged in a rough circle around a small campfire, attempting to dry Roanna's clothes and calm down after losing Jane. This scene is actually a series of very short scenes, each a head and shoulder shot of whomever is speaking.

Mina:  "We should put the fire out and go to sleep."

Jill: "The fire will help keep the mosquitos away."

Marina: "Would you rather fight mosquitos or pirates."

Jill: "No pirates are going to be walking around out here at night. The swamp is just as dangerous for them as it is for us."

Mina: "True. But they might be able to see the fire from the river. If they do we'll have company in the morning."

Jill a takes a stick and starts to break up the fire. All of the characters except Kata and Marina (whose hands are now tied again) stretch out on their backs on the ground to sleep. Kata and Marina lie on their sides next to each other.

Fade out very slowly as the light dies.

Scene 59

It is fully dark and everyone is sleeping (more or less). Kata begins to stir and get to a standing position.

Scene 60

A close up of Marina's face as she opens her eyes, sees Kata getting up, and then closes her eyes again - pretending to sleep.

Scene 61

Upper body shot of Kata quietly and carefully moves off into the jungle (to find a place to relieve herself).

Scene 62

Close up of Mark's face as he wakes up and sees what Kata is doing. He gets up quickly.

Mark: (to Kata)  "Where are you going?"

Kata: "Where do you think I'm going. You don't expect me to hold it do you?"

Mark: "No, of course not. But its dangerous out there. You saw what happened to Jane."

Kata: "Well, come with me then."

Mark and Kata move carefully into the jungle.

Scene 63

Upper body shot of Marina as she gets up quickly. The walks by the camera and follows Mark and Kata into the jungle, moving very quietly.

Scene 64

Kata walks by the camera, followed by Mark.

Scene 65

Kata walks by thge camera, still followed by Mark. Mark's face shows some irritation at how far Kata seems to need to go.

Scene 66

Kata walks carefully and directly toward the camera. She walks straight onto an area of marshy ground, looking back to see if Mark is still following. Suddenly the ground gives way ahead of her and she falls half way up her thighs into quicksand.

Kata: "Oh, Ooooohhhh! Mark, Help me."

Scene 67

Close up of Mark as he sees what has happened and rushes to help. He comes quickly but is careful to avoid the quicksand himself.

Mark: "Hang on, I'm coming!"

Scene 68

Mark arrives at the edge of the quicksand. Just as he does, however, Marina rushes him from behind and pushes him into the quicksand.

Mark: "Oh no! What are you doing?"

Marina: "Getting even, bounty man."

Mark: "Help! Help! Some one!"

Mark is now chest deep and sinking fast. Marina (with hands still tied behind her back) turns to reveal she is carrying a short length of line, which she now prepares to throw to Kata.

Marina: "Go ahead and yell. We're to far away. And even if they hear you no one's going to risk the swamp alone at night."

Mark: "Helllllp! You'll never get away with it." Heeellllp!"

Marina: "Seems to me we already have. As far as you're concerned anyway."

Kata: "Marina, hurry up, my hands are going under"

Marina throws one end of the rope and hits Kata in the back. Kata grabs the rope. Marina begins pulling her backwards toward safe ground. The camera follows Kata and Marina as Kata is pulled free of the mire.

Scene 69

Close up as Mark disappears into the quicksand.

Scene 70

Kata and Marina return to the clearing. The others have heard the shouting but have not left the clearing.

Jill: "What happened?"

Kata: "We had to go. I guess Mark must have followed us.

Marina: "Somehow he got into some quicksand. Kata tried to help and almost got caught in the quicksand too."

Kata: "He's gone. He went under so fast."

Mina: "We've got to be careful. We'll all end up in the quicksand if we keep wandering around alone out here."

Marina: "It wouldn't have happened at all if we wern't tied up."

Jill: "You're right. Well we're not interested in taking anyone to jail. Turn around, we'll untie you."

(Marina and Kata turn their backs.)

Fade to black

Scene 71

It is morning. The remaining safari members get up and get ready to continue on their way.

Jill: "Come on, we've got to keep moving. But be careful. We've got to stay together."

Kata: "We hear you."

Mina: "Jill, you're in better shape than the rest of us. You should take up the rear. Otherwise you'll go to fast and we'll get spread out."

Jill: "Yeah, I think you're right. Roanna, why don't you take the lead for a while."

Roanna: "Okay."

Fade to black

Scene 72

The remaining characters hike past the camera, following fairly closely behind each other.

Scene 73

Repeat of scene 65 from a different angle.

Scene 74

Roanna emerges from the jungle onto an obvious trail through more open territory. She turns to call to the others.

Roanna: "Look. Its a trail. We must be getting close to a village or something."

The others come quickly into view.

Mina: "Yes, Look, a trail."

Kata: "Maybe we'll make it after all.

Jill: "Let's not get too excited. The river pirates are still a threat."

Marina: "Yeah. Let's not get overconfident."

Scene 75

The characters hike past the camera, as in scene 74.

Scene 76

Three men and filthy river pirates beach their boat and look inland.

Pirate #1: "There's some one around here. I could smell smoke from a campfire last night. Keep your eyes open."

Pirate #2: "Yeah, and I swear I heard a woman screaming too. Heh Heh, Lets scout around a bit."

They go into the jungle.

Scene 77

The safari group, walking down a trail.

Marina: "Roanna, hold up a minute.

Roanna: "What is it?" (The others catch up and stop).

Marina: "We're getting too close to the river. Its right over there about a hundred yards."

Jill: "Well we're going in the right direction anyway."

Marina: "Yeah but we could be seen. Anyone on the river could see us easily. If they're pirates..."

Kata: "She's right, I don't think we should leave this trail but we've got to be careful. Keep a lookout."

Mina: "Shit, look. (she points toward the river and crouches. Everyone else drops to a crouch also.) "Damn, they look like pirates too."

Roanna: "Come on, let's make ourselves scarce. Over there (pointing across a clearing away from the trail) "Let's hide over there until they go away. They don't seem to be aware of us."

Fade to black as the group sets out across the clearing.

Fade back in to

Scene 78

Shot from behind the safari group as they hide behind bushes, watching the pirates. The pirates have come inland from the river and are at the spot from which they were first seen. They are clearing looking for some one.

Pirate #2: (pointing to the group) "Look, footprints. Several sets of them"

Pirate #1: "Do doubt. And all female, from the size of them."

Pirate #3: "Here's some more. Looks like they went this way (pointing right at the safari group). Let's follow.

They start across the clearing.

Scene 79

Shot from behind the safari group again. Everyone begins to pull back.

Marina: "Come on, let's get out of here."

They begin to retreat, keeping in a crouch to avoid being seen.

Scene 80

In the clearing with the pirates.

Pirate #2: "There they are (pointing). Let's get them."

(They begin to charge.

cut sharply to:

Scene 81

With the safari group.

Kata: "They've seen us. Run!

Everyone begins to run.

Scene 82

A shot of the group running by the camera in panic.

Scene 83

A shot of the pirates passing the same point.

Scene 84

A shot of several characters running past the camera. Roanna runs up to the camera, stops, and then runs off to the right. After one more goes by following the group, Mina stops in front of the camera, and turns left.

Scene 85

In a small clearing. The three pirates run into view, stop, and look in various directions.

Pirate #1: "Where the hell did they go?"

Pirate #3: "Maybe they split up."

Pirate #2: (pointing to a line of footprints) "Here. This way. One of them at least."

Cut to:

Scene 86

(In another clearing. Here there are two paths crossing at right angles) Roanna runs into the clearing on one path. She stops at the intersection. She looks back, then left, then right. Then she starts to run again, choosing the path straight ahead.

Scene 87

At the same clearing, but this time the camera is located on the original path. The camera films Roanna running down the path toward the river, still  hundred yards away.

Cut to:

Scene 88

The pirates run into the intersection. They stop and start looking around hurriedly.

Pirate #3: "Which way now?"

Pirate #2: "I don't see any sign."

Pirate #1: "(Pointing down the path to the right) "Stumpy (#3) you go that way" (Turning to the other pirate and starting to move down the left path) "Mondo (#2) come this way with me."

Pirate #2: (Pointing down the path straight ahead) "What about this way?"

Pirate #1: "There's nothing that way but quicksand."

(The pirates run down the trails to the right and left.)

Fade slowly to black.

Scene 89

Roanna is almost waist deep in quicksand. Her face shows horror and surprise (she has just plunged in moments before). She tried to remain still but slowly sinks deeper and deeper. She holds her arms above the surface and occasionally tries to lunge one way or another but she cannot move much. She starts to scream several times but stifles the scream in the realization it will attract the pirates. She does speak to herself however.

Roanna: "Oh, my God, what a choice. I can scream and then get tortured to death or keep silent and drown in quicksand." Other dialogue is ad-libbed.

Scene 90

A slightly closer view, now up to her shoulders. As the mud covers her shoulders she is overwhelmed by the horror of her immenent submergence. She can no longer surpress the need to scream. She tries to use her arms to push down on the mud but it does no good.

Roanna: "Help! Help me! Somebody help me! Oh! Oh! Oh please! Please somebody! Help me! Help me! Help!"

The camera now zooms in slowly as the mud reaches her neck.

Roanna: "Oh! Oh! Oh! No! no! Oh! Ooooooh! Nooooooo!"

As the mud reaches her chin she slowly tilts her head back. She begins pushing down repeatedly with her arms, causing herself to bob up and down slightly between her chin and somewhat deeper. After several cycles of this she is barely able to lift her mouth clear and sinks to her eyes between lunges. After two more lunges she begins to thrash aimlessly as she can no longer lift her mouth to breathe. She now sinks under completely, taking about five seconds to sink from her nose to the top of her head. Her arms continue to flail as they steadily sink until they disappear completely.

Fade very slowly to black

Scene 91

Jill: "I think you might be right Marina. It certainly will if we keep acting like stupid characters in a horror movie." (slaps at a mosquito)

Mina: "Maybe it would be better to let the pirates catch us" (slaps at a mosquito)

Marina: "Come n Mina, you know what they'd do to us." (slaps at another mosquito)

Mina: "But we'd be alive."(slaps at a mosquito)

Jill: "From what I've heard, we'd only stay alive until they're finished with us. Then they'd kill us somehow. Out here they'd probably just dump us in quicksand." (slaps several times at mosquitos)

Mina: "I guess you're right." (slaps again)

Marina: (slaps several times at mosquitos) "This is awful. Drowning in quicksand might be a lot better than being eaten alive by mosquitos"

Fade to black.

Marina: "That will fix you, Bounty Hunter. You can't have any more of my blood. There, you can't bite my arms (as she coats her arms). Yuo can't have by face (as she coats her face). And don't you touch my breasts, either (coating her chest). "There. Ha Ha. Now you can't get me. Ha Ha Ha Ha."

Scene 143

It is morning. Jill and Mina leave their camp and begin to walk again.

Jill: "Come on, let's go, and let's try to stay alive if we can."

Mina: "Right now I'm not sure that's our best option. The way Marina went it might be better to just jump into the quicksand and get it over with."

Jill: "It does seem inevitable, doesn't it."

Mina: "I feel like I'm trapped in a nightmare...or a really bad movie."

Jill: "Maybe the movie will end before the quiclsand gets us."

Mina: (laughing) "Yeah, then it can get us in the sequel."

Jill: "I wish this was a movie."
