Maggie Carchrie is a 24-year-old woman from Hyannis, MA, who has astounded listeners with her crystal-clear voice, her mastery of the unique sounds and rhythms of Gaelic Song and her ability to present these songs in a thoroughly enjoyable yet informative fashion. Maggie discovered Gaelic song and step dance in 1993 while on a trip to Nova Scotia to study Highland dancing. Since that time, she has returned each summer to Cape Breton. Her studies paid off, for in 1995, Maggie won the Women’s Championship in Gaelic Singing at the US Mòd. After graduating from the College of Wooster in May of 1997 with a degree in Music Therapy, Maggie made her first trip to Scotland. On the Isle of Skye she studied puirt a beul ("mouth music") at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig with well-known Barra singer Cathy Ann MacPhee. During the summer of 1998, Maggie returned to the Hebrides to study Gaelic Song at the Ceòlas music school on the island of South Uist. Her teachers at Ceòlas included Mairi MacInnes, Kenna Campbell, Mary Smith and Catriona Garbutt, all of whom are well-respected in the world of traditional Gaelic music.
In addition to her many appearances singing at Highland Games and other folk festivals in the United States, Maggie teaches step dancing, Highland dancing, and Gaelic song at her school, the Callanish School of Celtic Arts, and at the New Hampshire School of Scottish Arts. She has also been a member of the British Association of Dancing since 1992. Maggie is also sought after as a workshop presenter in both dance and Gaelic song. She performs with Irish fiddler Denya LeVine as the duo Cape Gael and with keyboardist/percussionist Thomas Leigh as the innovative Celtic duo Rù-Rà. Maggie attends Lesley College in Cambridge, MA, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in Expressive Arts Therapy.
