My
First Day in School
by Velma M. Carlson
My first day in school I remember so
well,
...even though I was only five.
I thought that the day would never end
...as I sat in my seat and cried.
The teacher I had was so very cross ~
...She "yelled" at us one by one.
It seemed we didn't do anything right ~
...So we waited for recess to come.
I remember we carried our lunch in a
pail.
...It was the only thing we had.
Dad would hook up "Old Maude" and take
us to school.
...When the weather was really bad.
There were many children in one big
room,
...and the grades were from one to eight.
Some of the boys were as rough as could be,
...so it was tough if you were ever late.
A "ruler" was used to punish
kids;
...It was used most every day ~
So of all the teachers I ever had,
...I'll always remember Miss Shea.
I can't think of her with love in my
heart,
...although, I know I really should.
She was very strict to the children but,
...maybe, did the best she could!
So, I'll never forget my first day in
school,
...though the years that have passed are many.
I'll always, yes, always, remember that day.
...Yes, I'll remember it more than any.
