Cassandra
at Three
by Nancy Ness
This one's for Stacie -
who likes to sleep in the morning
*smirking*
The break of dawn invades my pane.
The morning sun's my bane.
One eye peeks out
The other shouts
"To sleep - We both must feign"
Just as I doze, I feel a shake ~
"Oh, Mommy, Mommy, I'm awake!"
I hear her call my name
Too early for this game,
For I must sleep for goodNess sake.
Upon my bed she jumps with glee,
For after all, she's only three;
But this Mom needs more rest
Before the next day's test.
"Mommy, Mommy, play with me!"
I pull the covers overhead ~
I settle deeper in my bed,
And say, "I'm sorry, Dear,
....There is no Mommy here".
I close my weary eyes instead.
When I peek out, her face I see,
And sounding grown she says to me,
"Would you look at yourself?
....You ARE Mommy!"
I had to grin from ear to ear
And face today with newfound cheer.
