Chapter V - Special Events

Author Appearances

In March '97 the DC group was joined by Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, co-author of Afro-American Women - Struggles/Images. This was an excellent way to acknowledge the contributions and ongoing struggles of African-American women. Rosalyn Terborg-Penn shared how research on the subject of women emerged into a book. It was a great way to celebrate Women in History Month.

In April '98 Van Whitfield, author of Beeperless Remote stopped by to lead a book discussion. He also shared excerpts from his latest work, Something's Wrong With Your Scale. The group read several chapters, then provided honest feedback about his work in progress. Everyone's glad to see the book is complete and is now in book stores everywhere.

Fun Fun Fun

The Sister Circle members have established a tradition of celebrating the book clubs anniversary in a special way. For the past two years, members and friends have gathered together at the wonderfully relaxing CoolFont Resort & Spa in West Virginia. They enjoy the mountains and fresh clean air while taking advantage of massages, body wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures and more! They take pleasure in the opportunity to relax, rejuvenate and release stress in the good company of the sisters!

The book club members take a break from reading during the month of December. In December there is an end of the year book review, potluck dinner and gift exchange. The spirit of the meeting is fun and festive, with a focus on celebrating the holiday season with friends.

In November '96 the group went to The Kennedy Center to see the play, Having Our Say. The play told the story of the first 100 years of the popular Delaney sisters' lives. Everyone enjoyed the play and later engaged in a lively discussion about how the play differed from their book.

Hot fun in the Slumbertime - Slumber parties aren't just for children anymore. The MD chapter's first slumber party, held in March '98, was a big success. We enjoyed the pampered pleasures of facials and full-body massages. The food was delightful and the conversation flowed all night long! The next morning they woke up to an old fashioned country breakfast and discussed One Better by Rosalyn McMillan.

In October '98 the Raleigh/Durham chapter had a slumber party with lots of games, food and fun for everyone.

In February '99 the MD Chapter celebrated Black History Month at The National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC. They saw several beautiful works of art; including masks, headrests, jewelry, wooden carvings and a variety of other hand made collectibles. This was a great chance to learn about diverse African cultures, while celebrating our many contributions to American history.

Sister Circle in the Community

During the holiday season in '96 the group donated several bags of clothing to The Salvation Army.

The group fed hundreds of men, women and children at So Others Might Eat (SOME) in Washington, DC. Everyone feels strongly about serving the community where we live and work. Every member of the group is blessed and looks for opportunities to share their blessings with others.
