Shortly after its 2002 summer 2nd season finale, the TNT network announced that it was cancelling one of it's most successful original shows, Witchblade.

My own thoughts on the cancellation(s):

The summer of 2002 has been a particularly difficult season for sci-fi series. In May, only a couple weeks after the 2nd season finale, Dark Angel was cancelled by the Fox network. Then in early September, two more sci-fi shows (Witchblade and Farscape) were abruptly cancelled by their respective networks (TNT and SciFi).

Dark Angel's cancellation came less than 24 hours before Fox's new fall schedule was announced. This 11th hour cancellation flew in the face of previously published statements that Dark Angel's renewal was a done deal. Various rumors abound around the 'net, but in the end one fact remains - Fox cancelled Dark Angel to go with Firefly - a show that had previously been slated for a midseason replacement because the network did not think the pilot was ready for the fall season. Coincidentally, one of the Executive Producers for Firefly is also a higher up programming executive for the Fox network. While the reasons given for Dark Angel's cancellation seem justifiable (poor ratings, high production costs, etc.), the facts are anything but clear.

Witchblade and Farscape did not fare much better.

Witchblade was TNT's highest rated original show that received as good, if not better, ratings in its second season as in its first. Critics are puzzled by the cancellation of a such a successful show.

Critically acclaimed and a cult hit, Farscape was cancelled only days before the end of shooting the 4th season in Australia. Although the Scifi channel had picked up the series for two years (a 4th and 5th season) a year ago, they exercised their out clause that will leave the show stuck with a 4th season finale cliffhanger and no resolution. Reasons cited for Farscape's cancellation were declining ratings, high production costs and the inability to build on their fan base. (Sound familiar?) Fans will get to see the second half of the 4th season starting in January 2003.

The Farscape fans also have a campaign in progress to continue the series in whatever form they can. Click on the link below to find out more:
