Jojo Soria de Veyra's Pakikibaka
(Filipino song or music-album reviews)

"I HAVE also come up with my own recommendation notes on some of my (or Pinas') favorite Filipino music albums and/or songs, but limited only to those that found their way into my library. I do intend to compile this into a future book, when my library can be said to have already included everybody who deserves to be reviewed this way, and it's not yet at that state.
"May I make a hasty apology, though? For many among my peers (and some artists in this initial list themselves) would regard me as baduy (a tramp) for having the sense to do these reviews cum list at all. After all, many of us (artists included) look up to West-residing idols, and only regard fellows hereabouts as second-rate personas of the music world.
"I myself admit to a preference for US-, UK-, Aussie-, or European-recorded 'sounds' when being particular about English lyrics and/or money spent for studio time for more sound creations. This, set within the existing fact that many Pinoy acts pride themselves (admittedly or not) with being exact replicas of their Western references, e.g. Slapshock or Dicta License for being the Rage Against the Machine cum Deftones of the Philippines, Cynthia Alexander as sometimes the Sarah McLachlan of the Philippines (intentional? not?), Hagibis of the '80s as the Village People of the Philippines, and so forth and so on.
"But while there are certainly fans who applaud faithful replications of foreign acts (Gary Valenciano's Michael Jacksonisms onstage are still quite popular among female yuppies, as are Slapshock's or Dicta License's RATM/&c apings among its younger rock crowd), I also believe there are still local recordings and/or songs (by even the 'apes' themselves) that address other facets of music life that I cannot find or expect to find in foreign produce or in the act of aping. One of these recordings' unique achievements would of course be in the setting of the Filipino/Tagalog language into music, whether the music is West-borrowed or not. Another special factor in them would be in their referencing issues or concerns particular to Philippine geography or history, concerns that we can only expect, say, Yano to sing about and not expect Rage Against The Machine to heed for now. Even as there might be an Enya out there who wouldn't mind singing about Cebu." --- VIV III (jojo soria de veyra)
