Tommy is asleep. The room is empty, but is he really alone? He shudders.
An image of the Acid Queen pulsates in his mind. Her voice screams in
his ears.
The Voice of Pete can be heard throughout:
"Sickness will surely take the mind
Where minds can't usually go
The amazing journey isn't over
Until you learn all you should know
Through his veins her blood still flows
He sees through her eyes that transmit all they know"
Tommy sweats. He sees an image of Nora, writihing on the floor,
surrounded by pinballs. Her face is contorted and her eyes are rolled
back. She is speaking deliriously, every word torture, but Tommy can't
hear her. She is screaming, but Tommy can't hear her.
The Voice of Pete:
"A towering shadow, so black and so high
Covers the sun and darkens the sky"
Tommy wakes up. Darkness.
The Mind of Tommy:
"Why mother? Why?
What's happening to you?
Where are you?
Mother, can you hear me?
I know what I must do
You won't have to scream, you won't have to die
I'll protect you, I'll save you
It's up to me now
To find a way to reach you somehow
Mother, how can you die
When you make me live?
The last time I was with you, you held me
You guided me
You understood
I couldn't feel, but you helped me to fly
For a moment I felt that I touched the sky
I have nothing to give you
But it's up to me now
To find a way to reach you somehow"
He reaches out into the darkness.
"But how can I reach you when you can't reach me?
No one can reach me
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me!"
Tommy is still reaching into the darkness. Then he feels someone take
his hand. He slowly reaches up and touches the face. He feels a smile.
Then he feels the scar. The left side of the face is torn, deformed, and
filled with pain from long ago. Tommy's hand burns as he touches the
scar. Then he feels tears. Tears that make his hand stop burning. Tears
that make the scar melt away. He collapses on the floor at the feet of
his father.
The Mind of Tommy:
"Father, you can hear me!
Father, I want to see you
I know you're always near us
But Mother doesn't feel you!"
The Voice of Pete:
"Captain Walker didn't come home
His unborn child will never know him
He's believed to be missing with a number of men
Don't expect to see him again."
Tommy reaches out his hand, but feels nothing.Tommy:
"Oh Father, Father, Father...."
Captain Walker is standing behind him. He reaches down and gently
touches Tommy's eyes. Tommy blinks, and his eyes slowly focus on his
father's face. Captain Walker gathers Tommy into his arms.
Tommy speaks:
"Father, I can see you!
I never want to leave you
I want to fly again with you,
FatherI can fly with you every day
In my mind we can fly away
No one will have to know where we are
Past the planets and the stars
Let's fly away now Father!"
Captain Walker:
"My son, Tommy,
I've missed you so much
But today we must not fly away
I'm not just in your mind
I'm hereI'm touching your face
Eternity is not such a far away place"
Tommy:
"Father, I love you
Never let me go
You can't go away and leave me alone
Father don't leave me
Show me what to do
How can I be like you?"
Captain Walker:
"It isn't me who you must be
If you search, you'll find the Truth
I know the Truth
And so do you
It's down deep inside your heart
I can't find it to give it to you
That is something you must do"
Tommy:"
Listening to you I get the music
Gazing at you I get the heat
Following you I climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet"
Captain Walker (stopping him):
"There is a mountain
I'll show you where
Someday you'll find it
Someday you'll climb it
But it won't be me who takes you there"
Tommy and Captain Walker are standing on top of the mountain, watching
images of the past- an image of Captain Walker looking off of the
mountain at the sunset- images of Captain Walker and Nora together.
Tommy and Captain Walker then appear standing behind the waterfall,
watching more images from the past.
Finally, they watch a vision of the future, the vision of Nora writhing
on the floor surrounded by pinballs.
The Voice of Pete echoes throughout:
"The sun will shine through the haze within him
If he will let the sunlight in
He doesn't know how to lead or how to guide
But on the amazing journey
Together we'll ride"
Tommy and Captain Walker are back in the room where they started out,
except there is no ceiling, just the starry night sky. Tommy is shaking
and sweating, he once again collapses onto the floor. Captain Walker
sits down next to him, and places his cool hand on Tommy's burning forehead.
Captain Walker:
"Tommy, you can't reach your mother
Until you find the Truth for yourself
I can't save her, but I can forgive her
If she wants to find the Truth, she will
Tommy, I loved Nora very much
I love her still
Nothing is her fault
But she blames eveything on herself
The guilt is killing her
Tommy, you can't reach your mother
Until you find yourself"
Captain Walker lies down on the floor next to Tommy, and they look up at
the stars.
Tommy:
"Father, is it in my mind?
Can I really see the stars?
Or am I still blind?
I've been imagining them ever since my world went dark
I flew with you through the stars in my imagination every day
Are they still just in my mind
Where they quickly fade away?"
Captain Walker:
"The stars are real
Tommy, you can see
The stars are as real as you and me"
Tommy's eyes fill with tears. Captain Walker takes his hand.
Captain Walker:
"Tommy, it's time for you to go back now
You have your whole life ahead of you
It's time for you to live
To give all you can give"
Tommy:
"Father, I don't want to go back
I want to look at the stars forever
I want to laugh and sing
And see your face, and hear your voice
I want you to be with me in everything"
Captain Walker:
"You know I'll never leave you
I'll always be by your side
Your mother needs you, Tommy,
She's calling for you inside
There's something I want you to give her
Something you must find"
Tommy:
"Father, I'm so afraid
Don't you remember? I'm blind
How can I give to her
What I cannot find?"
Captain Walker:
"It will be dark
But I'll help you, do not fear.
Now look at the stars one more time
And remember they'll always be here
They'll wait for you, and so will I
And when you turn your face to the sky
Remember that even though you cannot see
What is here will always be"
He gently lets go of Tommy's hand. Tommy closes his eyes....Darkness.
Tommy opens his eyes, and slowly stands up, his hands outstretched in
front of him. He stumbles to one side of the room, feeling the wall. He
intently searches about the room, feeling in every drawer, corner, and
closet. Feeling everyting, but not feeling anything.
The Voice of Pete:
"There is a Leader.
There is a Guide.
On the Amazing Journey
Together you'll ride"
Tommy searches more franticly. Suddenly, a light begins to glow in front
of his eyes. He follows the light and smiles as his hands somehow touch
what he is looking for. He picks up his father's old airforce patch and
holds it to his heart.
The Mind of Tommy:
"Father, I can feel you
I can feel Mother too
Is it me, or Someone else?
Who will stop the pain?
Who will bring us all together again?
Father, you said it wasn't up to you
Now I know what I must do."
