General outline of funeral arrangements
Movement of the coffin to St James's Palace
Following completion of the coroner's formalities, the coffin was taken to the Chapel Royal in St James's Palace through the Clock Tower entrance in the early hours of Monday, 1 September, where it will remain until Friday night. It will then be moved by hearse at 8 p.m. to the Princess's apartment at Kensington Palace, where it will rest overnight.
Procession to Westminster Abbey
This will take place on the day of the funeral (Saturday, 6 September). The Procession will begin on Saturday morning at 9.08 a.m. from Kensington Palace. The Princess's coffin, borne on a gun carriage of the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, and escorted by mounted police, will then take the following route to St James's Palace:
Palace Avenue
Kensington High Street
Queen's Gate (past the Albert Memorial)
Carriage Road
Through the archway next to Apsley House
Hyde Park Corner
Under Wellington Arch
Constitution Hill
The Mall
At the junction with Marlborough Road, those walking in the Procession will join the cortège. They will include 500 representatives from the charities associated with the Princess, who will walk behind the coffin. The Procession will then proceed to Westminster Abbey by the following route:
Marlborough Road
The Mall
Horse Guards Road
Horse Guards Parade and Horse Guards Arch
Whitehall
Parliament Street
Parliament Square (East Side)
Broad Sanctuary
The Procession will arrive at Westminster Abbey at 10.55 a.m.
Funeral service
The service will take place during the morning of Saturday, 6 September, beginning at 11.00 a.m. A catafalque will be constructed under the Lantern, and on this the coffin will be placed for the service.
Practical reasons mean that those in the Procession will not be able to attend the service itself. Instead, one further representative from each charity will be invited to do so.
The charity representatives in the Procession will go to St Margaret's Church, near Westminster Abbey, where they can watch the service by videolink.
At the end of the service, members of the Princess's family and members of the Royal family will accompany the coffin in Procession down the Centre Aisle and through the Great West door to the hearse. The many people unable to attend the service itself will be able to share in the remembrance of the Princess, as there will be a one-minute silence after the service and before the coffin leaves the Abbey.
Westminster Abbey to Althorp
The funeral cortège will leave for Althorp by road. Family members will travel to Northamptonshire separately.
The route to be followed by the cortège will be:
Constitution Hill
Apsley Way
(Wellington Arch)
Hyde Park Corner
Park Lane
Cumberland Gate
Tyburn Way
Marble Arch
Oxford Street
Portman Street
Gloucester Place
Park Road (NW8)
Wellington Road (A41)
Finchley Road (A41)
Hendon Way (A41)
(To Brent Cross Flyover)
North Circular Road (A406)
(To Staples Corner)
M1 (Junction 1)
M1 (Junction 15A)
And thence to Althorp
Committal and interment
The coffin will be interred privately at Althorp, late on the same day as the funeral. |
