Keep in mind these are my personal opinions!! (meant in no way to offend anyone)

Why?

Why is Saturn my favorite senshi? Well, at first, when I didn't know anything about Sailor Moon beyond the first season, Venus was my first favorite. However, when I finally was able to actually see Saturn from anime tapes, and read about her in the manga, she became the strong first. She struck me as quite different than the other senshi. She was quiet, reclusive, and somewhat mysterious (even though I really don't think she's that mysterious anymore after reading volume 10 of the manga... she basically blurts out everything about here there...). The other senshi were usually always happy or popular at school, but Hotaru was different. She didn't have any friends... everyone at school was afraid of her because she'd go into her "seizures" and hurt those around her. She was alone, depressed, and sickly because of the horrible accident from her past. She basically had a miserable life before she met Chibi-Usa. Also, my personality is alot like Hotaru's... if you were to meet me on the street and start talking to me, you'd find me very shy, quiet, and almost anti-social. I see alot of her in me, especially her dark side. I suppose that's why I love her so much... I see alot of myself in her, which I really can't see in the other senshi (except everynow and then Venus... after an all night SURGE fest, I can act almost the total oposite of Hotaru). Also, I love it that Saturn is so powerful, yet uses her power in the way she feels is good. She helps protect her beloved princess, helps her fellow senshi, helps defeat enemies, ect.

Who's the most powerful Senshi?

Okay... this is a big thing/argument that's been going around the internet for years and years around the "Sailor Moon Community" (Ooo.. the Sailor Moon Community... I should post a rant about this)... who's the most powerful senshi? Lots of Saturn lovers think that Saturn is the most powerful since she is able to destroy the world in 3 words. In my opinion, I think Sailor Moon is the most powerful. After all, she's the queen of the solar system, and it even says in the manga, that Sailor Moon has the most brilliant, powerful star seed in the entire universe... which arouses interest in evil which causes them to go off to seek her... you don't hear anything about the enemies seeking Saturn out because of her power... its all Sailor Moon. And of course, since Sailor Moon IS the main character, it would be expected that she would be the most powerful. She has the ginjousho which is able to destroy the world also in a matter of seconds. And working with the power of good, increases its power. (which is how Naoko-sensei told the story... good over evil, the power of love.. .and all that happy squishy stuff)

Do you think Saturn is goth?

I've heard this all over the net. Most Saturn pages that I've seen have something mentioned about this!  In answer to the question: NO, Saturn isn't goth. I say this with absolute certainty, because I KNOW she isn't. Keep in mind, that I don't have anything against goths.. I actually love them. I have a good friend who was goth once.... but that's not really important. Why don't I think she's goth? Well, for several reasons...

1) People think she's goth because she wears dark clothing.... Oooh, THAT'S a valid argument for your point... *rolls eyes* Mrs. Nancy, someone my best friend, Chibi, knows, has been to Japan many many many times... (does she live there?) and she says that wearing black is a BIG thing... It helps you to look slimmer, your skin to look more pale(look under #2), and make you look all around sleeker and stylin'. Also, (as it says in the manga) there must be some connection to being sickly and wearing black. Some classmates of Hotaru's commented "She's been wearing those black tights all year!  Is she sick in body?" Also, Chibi-Usa asked Hotaru why she wears black alot, and Hotaru answered,"From an accident long ago, I received many wounds." After the 10th volume of Sailor Moon, Saturn is reborn and returned to a child. She's no longer sickly, and she starts to wear lighter clothes (see a pattern here?)

2) People think she's goth because she has pale skin.... anyone who has researched Japan (or seen TONS of Japanese Sailor Moon episodes) can see that pale skin is good in Japan. (Its not like in America where people like to permit themselves to a higher chance of skin cancer by making their skin a shade that they weren't born in.) Its like in old England where it was fashionable to be as white as you could possibly be. Ladies even slept in black sheets so they could show to their husbands that they were pale, and when going out, they always wore a hat to protect their face from the sun. In Japan, its like that too... being fashionably pale. In the SM manga, Chibi-Usa commented on how Hotaru was so pretty with her pale skin. Mamoru commented that it was so pretty pale "like new fallen snow." I think maybe Hotaru is supposed to be a quiet, Japanese beauty, with her dark hair, dark eyes, pale skin, and dressy clothing. In one of the SuperS episodes, a portrait painter painted Usagi, and Usagi was a little disapointed commenting,"My eyes are much bigger than that, arn't they? And my skin is much paler too... isn't it?"

3) People think she's goth because she collects lamps and 'practices witch craft'. Okay, I'd LOVE to have a room like Hotaru's with all those lamps in it! Hotaru collected them because maybe Naoko wanted to have a lil pun on her name Hotaru (which means "firefly"). A buncha little glowing lamps sure did remind me of little fireflies when Hotaru showed Chibi-Usa and Usagi her room. It also reflected Hotaru's moods at the time... kinda depressing, but mysterious. I know I sit in my room with my little flash light when I'm depressed.
Chibi: "Candles and lamps are ENVOGUE all over the world! Its big fashion trend, and it could have been a pun on the O-Bon Celebration of the dead." Since Saturn is the senshi of death and all...
Okay, on to the witch craft thing... she DOESN'T practice it. Anyone who came up with this idea probably wanted more ideas for their goth page so they took any little thing from the anime and drastically exagerated it. I've seen on serveral pages that proof that Saturn practices wicca is that when apon healing Chibi-Usa, she lost strength. (pages say that in wicca, if you do something to someone, it'll reflect on you 3 times over). If Hotaru really WAS practicing wicca, if she healed Chibi-Usa using it, Hotaru would have been BLESSED 3 times over! Okay... I don't want to go onto a HUGE speech about the ways of wicca, so I'll just skip over my hugeo speeches involving big words. In the scene where Chibi-Usa is healed by Hotaru, Hotaru just uses her power that she's had since she was born (for being Sailor Saturn)... she isnt using any sort of witch craft to do it. About her 'loosing strength', she's done that for 17 episodes! She falls over in pain because of Misstress 9, her body deteriating, she's sickly, ect. (but anyway, like I said... she wouldn't be hurt 3 times over... she would be blessed 3 times over if she was practicing true wiccan magic)
Chibi: "Wicca belives in supernatural healings! YE GADS, and Wicca isnt Goth! REAL wicca dosent embrace a head of all evil, and hardly embraces evil at all except acnowledging that it exsists, REAL wicca is all about healing the earth and yourself, and strengthening your spirit"

Also, the gothic subculture barely even exists in Japan.

But keep in mind, I have nothing against goths.... I love them just as I'd love any other person. I just don't believe that Saturn is goth. If she WAS goth, and Naoko said she was, and it was in the manga/anime, I'd have no problem with it... Saturn would still be my favorite senshi (I might even love her even more if she was goth, but she isn't...).

As Chibi, my best friend says," I LOVE the goth culture, and if she HAD been goth, I would love her even more. But SHE IS NOT and thats nothing bad about Goths in general, the romantic and darker poets and scholars who romanticise the darker things in life."
