MOON-SATURN-URANUS-VENUS, ELSEWHERE...

XL Let's look at phenomenon of Aidan. She alternatively appears either as a gallery owner or as an artist. What are the astrologic grounds for such a dualistic activity, according to her map?

JH The most characteristic for any artist's astrological map is the so called fifth house (the V house), the house of creativeness, which is decisive as for his or her artistic nature. Aidan's V house is very good. It's often considered that artist is a man who has Sun in his V house, that is art becomes a natural form of self-expression and personal realisation. In fact a man wouldn't necessarily become an artist as he might not realise himself in this way openly. In Aidan's case there no Sun at all in the V house, instead there's Moon there; and that's rather strange and interesting, because traditionally Moon stands for what might be called subconscious or a night consciousness, a dark and mysterious abyss of the soul, the sexuality, the motherhood. Moon in the V house is itself a problem for a person. On the one hand, it's a deep and very intimate sphere. On the other hand, it becomes a matter of creativeness, when in the V house.

XL So, this is the point where Aidan the artist parts with Aidan the gallery owner?

JH No only that. Moon here means that for Aidan creativeness is the necessary source of her life energy. That's what drives her physically and even physiologically, like blood transfusion. Contrariwise, to live and breathe, having such a Moon, one might go though much trouble. Moon in the V house creates the situation when one's art must be well understood by others. Simply having a Moon in the V house would make one's creative potential attractive for others especially for men. But the question is that creativeness have to be considered by others as artistic work and at the same time shouldn't make up problems for one's life; that's really difficult...

Back to Aidan's horoscope, another characteristic of the Moon in the V house is it's opposition to Saturn in the XI house. That's even more interesting, as long as Saturn is responsible for that part of the human, which restrains one's flesh, provides self-discipline and self-suppression, structures one's personality and so on - while the Moon means quite opposite things. Sometimes these two tempers happen to combine harmonically, reasonably relieving with time. Or they could develop simultaneously and moderately. In our case the situation is quite different. Opposition of Moon to Saturn means that either one or another may display. Either creative and sensuous side, that fills with living energy, fresh powers and erotic feelings from within, and then it's hard to put any barriers; or the barriers are strong and then as a rule, any life is mortified. Such an inner conflict doesn't support artistic activities, but forces one to live an alternating life - go on bender and then escape from bender to cloister.

XL In other words, it means Aidan could be either an artist or a curator, but not both?

JH No, I don't mean curator, it's exactly the reason to go to cloister. But this inner conflict must be solved by any person through the balance of the two mutually exclusive parts. In Aidan's case we could see these parts even more exclusive than in many others. So when the two parts are well balanced, there should be found a sphere for them both to work together. Here comes the gallery owner's activity. This is both creativeness, art and dictatorship. Creativeness and art are from the V house, and how the person fits into society is the sphere of the XI house. If the Saturn's function of structuring and control be applied toward Moon only, then it might show well in the work of gallery owner.

Anyway, seeing Moon in the V house, structured by Saturn, we may clearly consider that Aidan's early works should have been interesting as for the color, or even more as for emotional content, but rather unperfected in form. The latest works I saw, have gained such a formal condition, that it is a practically pure Saturn. They've been structured up to a pattern or crystal, so far from what is typical for Moon. But what's funny, they bring us the feeling of Moon; they are opium-sensuous, somewhat cool and mysterious.

XL Does it mean that the form of Saturn is essentially a neo-classicism...

JH The form of Saturn is not even a neo-classicism, but whatever form be it very well structured. In the abstract it's rather a pattern.

XL But that Aidan lately tends to shift to neo-classicism means that the structuring power of Saturn is strong.

JH Yes, she realises the balance betted and deeper. We might expect that the happy way of working both as an artist and a gallery owner will justify itself even more. As long as the initial conflict is present, conjunction of the exclusive ways of activity is a solution of the conflict. And this is an absolutely necessary conjunction for her.

XL So we can't divide an artist from the gallery owner in Aidan.

JH Yes, and she has to fly round, because in her case it's not a question of freedom of creativeness but rather a question of personal survival. More than that the Moon with all its magnificence is positioned in Leo. So if there's art then it's a bright and gorgeous art, well ornated, with some demonstrative purple, royal experiments.

XL And it's not by chance that she has chosen mythological subjects for this exhibition.

JH Sure, mythological subjects are exactly the royal subjects. All totalitarian regimes admire mythological subject.

XL How does the story of Leda and the swan fit here?

JH It's a good question. Moon has an outstanding creative aspect with Jupiter in Aidan's map. Jupiter stands for the source of life energy, money, a source of divine patronage in general. And this favour displays in the sensuality and lunar emotionality in her art. It's amazing, but seems that Aidan has got a psychoanalytic insight with this story of Leda and the swan. The swan is Jupiter, and Leda here is exactly the Moon. If not Jupiter then nobody might remember Leda. The painting explains this aspect of Moon to Jupiter interaction almost perfectly.

As for the judgement of Paris, it's somewhat better trick. Aphrodite is not a Moon. Venus is the same as planet Venus in the map. In Aidan's map Venus is positioned in Taurus. But Aphrodite-Venus has here a deep personal conflict with Neptune, the lord of sea abyss, and any abyss in general. Neptune in astrology often means what is also called the celestial Aphrodite. Randomly this part is given to Uranus, as astrologers say. So here we see a very touching scene, a conflict between earthly and heavenly sensuality. It's very different from the lunar sensuality. Lunar one is sexual, while Venus means emotional romanticism. Sexual sensuality is the main point for creativeness, but Venus with its romanticism is being driven to some other place. Though Venus goes through a conflict between earthly romanticism and abstract, idealistic one. So this very conflict is solved through the Moon. Here we go to the judgement of Paris.

XL He is given an intellectual, a feminist, but his choice is beauty.

JH It's even worse than just an intellectual and feminist. There's a warrior goddess who's much more serious than a mere feminist. It's a temptation of pride. And Venus is also here. But, he gives the apple to Venus not because he's chosen Venus, but because he's chosen Helen. He chooses the Moon.

XL Thus Aidan fits into my gallery quite perfectly, as to Helen and Selena.

JH Aidan gets into your gallery not only as to Helen Selina, it's even funnier. The judgement of Paris fits very well as if it were a tracing-paper for this map. Venus culminates and reigns, but the choice goes to Moon, which happens to be the real driving force. In this map interaction of power, expressed in force, power, expressed in patronage, and power, expressed in romantics, resolves through concrete sexual sensuality. This sensuality declares in creativeness of Helen, not Aphrodite. The pathos of this myth is much in that. As well as the pathos of the map - conflict of gods is solved through the Moon.

Here is a parallel with XL Gallery. In Paris's story Helen and Selena are the one. She is the Moon because she is promised to become his wife, and she is also a sexual object. Selena as a name, well, it's a fact.

XL It means Aidan have chosen the most adequate place, where she could be understood, because the structure here is akin.

JH The structure is undoubtedly akin. Then there's a question by what place could Aidan choose it. This is the most mysterious thing, because one couldn't analyse consciously such delicate and deep things. Even if one is very special.

The content of the V house, besides Moon is remarkable. There's also Uranus there. While Moon is what we really see, then the two present higher planets speak of the energies which the Moon translates (or what Americans often call drainage - carriage of transpersonal powers). Uranus usually means the energy of revolution, of insight, 'satori', energy of some catastrophes and bursts. This is very close to what XL is. You are more correlated by Uranus, though as people may be by Moon. But Uranus here is absolutely exquisite.

XL Then Aidan was inevitably drawn into revolution.

JH And even more, she must be very impulsive in her work. Absolutely clear that major part of what she does should be a result of insight. It's a Zen-Mendeleyev variant. She tries hard to do something for a long time, then she gets an insight and her work comes out ready, and she hits the nail on the head. It's impossible to logically cipher out the hit. That's the mechanism of Uranus expression in consciousness, and the similar mechanism of expression is found in creative work. These are strong, bright and transpersonal issues that are drawn to symbolism.

XL By the way, her choice of the exhibition place was very impulsive.

JH And the map shows a drive to symbolism in art; at last we get here a mythological symbolism.

XL The neo-Academism and neo-classicism is rather an abstract symbolism.

JH Neo-classicism might be named symbolism, nay, Aidan's exhibition brings it to Zen consummation, when all hieroglyphs are drawn in one line and an inkless brush leaves a few scratches. Inner content gets an output in one symbol. And what's beyond the symbol goes deeper. It goes to the art of a single stroke. That's again - due to Uranus - an ingenial quirk out of conflict between the Moon and Saturn. We draw the whole content of Moon, a sensuous painting, very attractive and sexual, and over this Moon we place Saturn in the form of tight bark with one short symbol. And alongside we put the picture of how the Moon is seen from Saturn, from afar. So it becomes multidimensional. Not incidentally we have a wordplay here. Roentgen is Uranus, X-rays, and again a coincidence with XL.

XL Aren't there enough coincidences?

JH My congratulations. X-rays, X-gallery, eXtrasensory (feeling and viewing 'beyond'), roentgen, uranium (the element) as the source of X-rays, the planet Uranus which is believed to be responsible for those rays. Uranus is responsible not only for revolution in social sense, but with revolution in science. When art incorporates breakthroughs of science and technology, its again a Uranic manifestation. Usage of technological achievements - laser, radioactive materials, photocopying, photography or else - in arts always means the presence of Uranus as a transpersonal planet.

XL To finish with the talk I'd like to remind an American expression 'the right man in a right time in a right place' (though often used with 'wrong' adjective). At some point conjunction of Aidan with XL Gallery was providential. The junction happens on September 23, under the sign of Libra, which includes Venus and Uranus...

JH Yes, Libra sign includes Venus which in the highest aspect is symbolized by Uranus or Neptune. In Aidan's map Uranus resolves the conflict between Venus and Neptune through creativeness, due to Moon influence; and due to this interaction, Uranus also resolves conflict between Moon and Saturn, the conflict between form and content.

XL Plus, Aidan uses Uranic technologies...

JH ... and hits the XL Gallery, which associates with Helen and Selena.

XL ... and with revolution, as well as with attempts to look beyond artist's work.

JH Yes, even for astrology this symbolic situation is too much general. I feel that some psychoanalytic, archetypal reality takes the field. We can see mythological archetypes and their cross-overs in the names, titles and dates - a meaningful coincidence of details. When the details themselves are beyond logical explanation, but coincide too meaningfully. And the mystic atmosphere dominates (by the way this is the expression of Neptune and Uranus spirit). Analysing the current situation, i.e. situation of Aidan - as a gallery owner and an artist - and situation of the exposition - as paintings and their roentgen photographs - and situation of this exhibition in XL gallery, anyway we butt into the same problem: could an egg exist without its yolk, or could a yolk exist without its shell. But it happens to be one whole thing. We're trying to knock down the thing to details, and it turns out that every detail permanently determines other details. The same way as it's impossible to dissociate Aidan the person from Aidan the gallery owner, Aidan the gallery owner from Aidan the artist, Aidan the artist from Aidan the woman, Aidan the woman from Aidan the person, so it's impossible to dissociate these works neither from woman, nor from person, artist, nor from gallery owner. As a result the person can not be detached from parallels that appear in the symbols beyond her works, and the symbols can not be detached from parallels that come from the fact of arranging this exhibition in this gallery...
