Marlenajon has always felt close to turtles. "I see them all the time while I'm having my daily kayak paddle," she says. "They're floating sandy islands; swimming cushions of yellow and grey."

"I surf with them in the crested waves. I see them as tiny twirling mountains or big bubbles rising in deep shades of blue."
