THE CASTING PROCESS

photo taken by Daniel Bally
Using a "Pouring Shank" I carefully pick up the "crucible". The Pouring Shank is a piece of 1/2 inch diameter reinforcement steel which I shaped to allow me to pick up the cast iron pot and to tilt it during the pour. You will notice in subsequent photographs how the "shank" assists with the pour. Again please note that the entire pouring area has been covered with sand in case of an accidental spill. If molten Aluminum falls on unprotected concrete its extreme heat will instantly vaporize the moisture in the concrete. As the resulting steam attempts to escape it will literally explode, throwing molten Aluminum and bits of concrete straight up. This is not something you want to occur.
