Tori in Memphis 1998
On October 12, 1998, I traveled to Memphis, TN to see Tori Amos...and had the pleasure of meeting my most fave artist, Tori!! Here is my review of the day!

Pre-Show
After driving 12 hours through the night from Detroit, I was prepared to wait however long I had to in order to partake in this mythical preshow "meet and greet" I had heard after 5 years of following Tori's music. I had missed her by 15 minutes several years ago in Ann Arbor, MI and was determined not to let it happen again. My friend Scott and I arrived in Memhpis around 9:00am- checked into our hotel, cleaned up, and prepared to stand in line.

We met several kewl people in line and spent the time chatting, eating Kerri-provided animal crackers and drinking soda acquired by those venturing out of line to a hamburger joint up the road, I passed the time by doing the homework for the class I was missing to go on my adventure. Finally after several hours of anxious waiting, we were lined up and hastily walked over to the barricades around the corner, the number system we had been presented with failing miserably. (I was #20- but as I found in later Meet & Greets - this mattered little).

Once there, while waiting, I met MikeWhy (the owner of the dent in the tori universe site which I adore.... I thought I recognized from his page, but wasn't quite sure it was him (BTW: That's Mike-the tall guy w/glasses) and we spoke about the various "rules" set up by Tori's security.(IE: no moving, 1 item signed, etc) I was, needless to say, very very excited by this impending first meeting!

Meet & Greet

We all serenaded the cook on his birthday with a chorus of "thank you's," Tori arrived looking very relaxed in her overalls and a comfy sweater. I waited on the opposite side of the barrier, anxious to finally meet the voice who has brought beautiful music into my world. I watched, smile blazing, as she took the time to talk to everyone along the barricade, expressing concern for both the faces she recognized and the new ones, some with tears in their eyes. It was quite a moving experience.

Then she was there, in front of me, talking to MikeWhy about the upcoming show in Louisville. She smiled at me and took the picture I had outstreached in my hand for her to sign. "What's your name?" she asked softly. I replied, my voice catching in disbelief that the woman whose voice filled my car, room, and head was standing there - speaking to me - "It's Jeska." and she became distracted with another fan who wanted a quick picture, took the pic, and then asked me for my name again.

Immediately relaxed by her calming presence, I told her again and she signed the picture for me with a smile. In my flurry of nervous energy, I mentioned to her we had driven 12 hours to see the show and she asked where we were from, "Detroit, I had missed your show there, so here we are." She laughed. I then mentioned that we were probably leaving a few hours after her show (I had class the next evening --i was only an hour late!) and she looked concerned and asked me, "If I was sure I wanted to do that." I was touched by the genuine concern she showed for me and the rest of her Toriphiles. The whole meeting couldn't have taken longer than 45 seconds, but it will be something I will remember forever. There is nothing more satisfying than finally meeting someone you intensly admire, and having them live up and exceed your expectations.

The Show

After such a wonderful pre-show experience, I was encouraged that the show was going to be amazing, and I was correct in my assumption. The only flaw was the 2 drunken fans from Alabama who insisted upon screaming to each other the entire show. (Anyone there remember the "We love you tori, we saw you in Birmingham" girls? They were directly in front of me and annoying as well... they were quite annoying) But I wasn't about to let that stop my show. Tori was came out onto the stage in a wonderful black outfit with a sparkling apron/smock type thing over it. The emsemble caught and refelcted the light across the piano.

I was entranced by hearing the band behind Tori. Because I was in England when she came through Detroit, I have only been able to read about the new "with the band" sound, and the show lived up to the reviews. The song that touched me the most was the solo version of "Merman," which I had never heard before performed live. I felt my face get hot as tears rose to my eyes and I relized she was playing the song for the girls I had spent time talking to before the show.
