Anne Rice Now here's a writer! I love her Vampire Chronicles  which include: Interview With the Vampire, The Queen of the Damned, The Vampire Lestat, and The Tale of the Body Thief.  Then there are the books chronicling the Mayfair Witches and I like these even better than the Vampire Chronicles.  They are comprised of: The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos. Her home page shows the mansion in New Orleans featured in Lasher. It's her home! Definitely visit.
Clive Barker Some of his stuff is too macabre for me. But I loved Everville.
Stephen King I especially like his earlier works; Pet Sematary and his short stories. Of course, who can forget Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, Firestarter, Cujo, Christine, It, and The Tommyknockers.
Dean R. Koontz The Watchers was the best! Lately he's gotten away from the genre that made him great; the books that were full of chills and suspense but had a basic human decency at their core.  These include: Twilight Eyes, Strangers, Darkfall, The vision, and Whispers.
Phil Rickman If you haven't read this guy you have missed something! He writes suspense thrillers based in Wales which is already steeped in mystery and legend. He is my current favorite.  Especially check out Candlelnight and December.
Agatha Christie I don't care what you say; Agatha Christie is the greatest in her line. I read her stories over and over.  Perhaps her most famous is Murder on the Orient Express.
Tony Hillerman This   mystery writer is tops! His mysteries, based on the Navajo reservations of the southwest, combine detective fiction with a fascinating grounding in Navajo ways and Navajo religion and legends.  I have it on good authority that the Navajos respect his portrayals of their people and their ways.  You'll love his stories. Those I have enjoyed include: Coyote Waits,  Skinwalkers, The Ghostway, The Dark Wind, People of Darkness, The Blessing Way, A Thief of Time.
Elizabeth George Writes great mysteries based in Britain. Her latest, featuring her team of opposites:  the wealthy and high-born Detective Lynley and his counterpoint assistant, the resentful commoner Sgt. Barbara Havers is In the Presence of the Enemy.  Other excellent books include: Well-schooled in Murder,  Payment in Blood, and A Suitable Vengeance.
Sara Paretsky The exploits of V.R. Warshawski portray a daring and hard-bitten female PI who is still vulnerable as a woman. She's real.  I really like her.  Even my husband likes her.  Books I have liked include: Tunnel Vision, Bitter Medicine, and a book of short stories: Windy City Blues.
Michael Chrichton If you haven't read his books, you've surely seen the movies, e.g. Jurassic Park. The first book I ever read by him was The Andromeda Strain. It was fantastic; still one of his best to my mind. Every one I've read since has been good, including The Terminal Man, Congo, Eaters of the Dead, and Sphere.
P.D. James A mystery writer on the level of the true greats. The last I read was Unnatural Causes where  Superintendent Dalgliesh pursues the grisly murder of a mystery writer.
