QUESTIONS:

Pastor Russell Era

Q: There was an article written in late 1911 or early 1912 by an N. E. Nelson, of Duquesne, PA. He is not related to the Nelsons who were later in the Detroit area as far as we know, but he seems to be a friend to the truth and wrote a lengthy article in the National Labor Tribune where he places Bro. Russell along side the other major reformers. The title: "Pastor Russell and His Mission--Culminates the Reformation". We would like to find out what issue of the National Labor Tribune it was printed in and if there is any information on N. E. Nelson.

Q: What was the affect of the Civil War on the Pittsburgh area?

Q: Are their any elderly brethren or children or grand children of brethren (probably also elderly) who worked at the Bible House that we can call and interview.
Q: Before the Society was chartered in 1884, Russell served as secretary and treasurer. William H. Conley served as president. Any idea who he was and what happened to him after 1884?

Q: The small group in early Allegheny that "searched the scriptures" for 5 years and eventually associated and disassociated with Barbour's group. Any idea who was in this class? Did Russell form the class? Or was it a class of Adventist already in existence? Doesn't seem likely that a 17-year-old would form a Bible Study group, then again. Russell was not ordained, was he?

Q: Also ... who met and married first, Joseph Russell or Charles Russell? Did Charles meet Maria as a result of the older Russell's union with her sister, or the other way around? Maria still has relatives around so they should be able to answer these questions.

Q: What was driving the Vow in 1908. Insisting that the brethren working for Bro. Russell take this vow seemed out of character for Bro. Russell. There is some thought that something behind the scenes was driving this issue. We have reports that it was Rutherford's behavior, but Rutherford remained on as a Pilgrim and later was promoted to the inner circle of management.

Q: What were Bro. Russell's plans for change at the Bethel. He had reported to others that things were not going well at the Bethel and changes would take place upon his return from the trip on which he died. What were those changes?

Q: The Peanut Story. Many years ago we read about a peanut story. That Bro. Russell had a weakness for peanuts, and to exercise his self-discipline he would keep a peanut in his pocket and not eat it-or something to this affect. Where is this written down?

Q: Special preparations for burial. It is written someplace that there is a concrete slab poured over Bro. Russell's coffin. There were fears that his body would be dug up and examined. Can anyone find this citation or confirm the story.

Rutherford Era History

Q: Rutherford suggests, in his defense of why he took control the way he did that Bro. Ritchie was demoted by Bro. Russell just prior to his final trip. The deposed directors never refute this. Why was Ritchie demoted?

Q: We have reports and maybe even a picture of Rutherford's Girlfriend. Rutherford lived at the Bethel or the home in San Diego, while his wife lived in Monrovia, 100 miles from San Diego. Did Rutherford indeed have a girlfriend and if so, how was this accepted.

Q: What happened to the $160,000 held in the safe at the Bethel after Bro. Russell's death. Was this the money that belonged to the Sr. that had left it in trust to Bro? Russell?

Q: Later history ... what did Maria Russell do after the death of Charles, who did she associate with? When did she die, and is there any reference to her death anyplace? I understand she lived in Florida and is buried there. I was told she died in the 1930s. It would be interesting to trace her life.
