The Runner

One race wasn't enough for him
The runner wanted another go
I told him I was already exhausted
What happened next, I'll never know
I had run and crossed the finish line
He was far behind, in second place
I broke through the ribbon when he was halfway
But he still wanted to finish the race
That's when the stadium lights went out
When the spectators were asleep or gone home
I had to leave and check out of the stadium
And venture out into the great unknown
I never ran against him before that night
I had never met him or spoken to him before
The following week I returned to the stadium
So we could run together once more
When the gun was raised, he took off like a rocket
Then I ran backwards along the circular track
I removed the hurdles before he came to them
I then left the stadium, never to come back.
