Design Boxes

For this assignment, you will create a box that has six sides, each side having a visual definition of one of the elements or principles of design. You will be required to create one square each of the elements and principles, and will choose your best six for putting on the box.

The elements of design:

color                                                          line
form or shape                                            space
texture                                                       value

The principles of design:

balance                                                     unity
contrast                                                    pattern
emphasis                                                  movement

Each picture will measure 6 inches by 6 inches.

How we will do this assignment:

Each day we will work on one principle or element, marking off a 6" square of sketchbook paper and creating our visual definition within that square. After we have finished all 12 principles and elements, we will build the box, using a piece of poster board that you supply. After the box is constructed, we will glue the six best pictures to the box, label the principle/element defined, finally covering the exposed edges with colored paper strips.

Craftsmanship will be a major part of the grade for this project, so take care with your materials and work.
