History and Short Description

The orphanage was opened four years ago because of the increasing number of social orphans in Russia. Before the orphanage existed, social orphans and orphans from Podol'sk were sent to orphanages in neighbouring towns. 13 of the 33 children in the Podol'sk orphanage are true orphans rather than social orphans.

The children live in very good conditions sleeping two to five in a room. They are mostly social orphans with brothers, sisters and parents - contact with parents is very rare, as most have been deprived of their parental rights because of alcohol or drug abuse, or for other reasons. Our ROOF teachers write that most of the children are excitable, have a hard time concentrating and are not very motivated.

As the oldest children in the orphanage are 15, none have 'graduated' from care yet so it remains to be seen what will happen when they do. In all cases, orphanage staff and ROOF teachers have at least a year to work with the children before sending them on to life outside the orphanage.

We celebrate birthdays, the Birthday of the Orphanage itself, Den' Uchitelya (Teacher's Day), New Year and other holidays.
