The Earliest Crosbys

A great deal of circumstantial evidence concerning the earliest Crosby ancestors was collected by Mr. J. Gardner Bartlett and documented in "Simon Crosby the Emigrant: His English Ancestry and some of his Descendants" by Eleanor Davis Crosby, first published in 1914. The suggested relationships are as follows:

John Crosby was born about 1440; he lived in Stillingfleet and Alne in Yorkshire, England. No information is known about his wife whom he married before 1470. They had seven children:

John Crosby died in 1502.

Miles Crosby, born about 1483, was named as an executor of his father's will but was of insufficient age to prove the will when his father died. No information is known about his wife but he had two sons:

  • Thomas Crosby, born about 1510
  • William Crosby

Miles Crosby died after 1538.

Thomas Crosby, born about 1510, married Jannett, the widow of John Bell, about 1542. They had four sons:

  • Miles Crosby, born about 1543
  • Anthony Crosby, born about 1545
  • Ralph Crosby, born about 1547
  • Nicholas Crosby, born about 1550

Thomas Crosby died in 1558/59. Jannett died in 1568 or 1569.

Anthony Crosby was born about 1545 in Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, County York, England. He married, about 1570 a woman named Alison, whose maiden name is believed to Blanchard. They had two children:

Anthony died in 1599.
