Duty, Honor, Country make you strong enough to know when you are weak and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid

The 5th Marines based in An Hoa defended the TAOR dominated by the confluence of two major rivers.  The Vu Gia and the Vu Bon. Route  4 runs from Route 1 in the east to the western extremity of the Thuong Duc corridor.   An Hoa is surrounded to the north by the mountains of "Charlie Ridge," the mountains of the enemy's Base Area 112 to the west and  the Que Sons mountains to the south.  The Marines called the plain between the Vu Gia and Vu Bon the ARIZONA. To the east of that is a fertile stretch of enemy infested hamlets and paddies know as Goi Noi Island.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions rotated covering the different areas of the TAOR. The three main areas were the Thuong Duc Valley along Route 4 with strong points on Hills 65, 25, and 52, and operations on "Charlie Ridge".  The second area was the  outpost at Liberty Bridge which included Phu Loc 6, the Phu Nhuans and launching sweeps into Goi Noi Island. The final area was the "Arizona Territory." Here we defended no fixed positions, since this was hard-core enemy country. Instead companies moved continually from place to place, patrolling, setting up night ambushes and searching for food and supply caches.
