地圖本身具有空間的廣闊層面，而這本書卻是探索地圖背後時間的位置，從一八四一年到一九九七年之間，香港在地理上發生了巨大變化。本書作者以一個考古學家的眼光，憑藉著殘存的維多利亞地圖，通過想象解讀，重構一個湮沒的歷史城市本來的面貌。書中以歷史、文化和權力的暗示為特徵，巧妙地對地理環境的今昔進行追敘。時間之軌跡在書中凝固。文章可讀性強，知識豐富。
