Wish you were here in Mexico City
How many times have you received a letter or a
postcard containing these exact words, which state a wish
that you know isn't true? It's just a reminder that
someone is enjoying life in a far-off and exotic country
while you're stuck here, facing the everyday problems.
Well, next time, just think about all the "unique"
things that you can enjoy right here and you'll realize
that in this city you can find all this and more:
 | If it's adventure you seek, you could always take
a midnight walk. Every step will send an
adrenaline rush through your veins. The
unexpected, the unknown awaits... |
 | If you're not the adventure type, but enjoy a
good walk, you could always join any of the
several protest marches we have in the city. The
routes and schedules are clearly marked in any
local newspaper. You can visit the most famous
places of Mexico City: The Angel, El Zócalo,
Los Pinos and if you're lucky you can even
meet someone famous, learn about different
cultures or at least pick up new vocabulary. |
 | Food is no problem. At every corner you can find
small carts offering select delicatessens from
Mexican cuisine. You should try the famous tacos
stuffed with exotic meat like nana, buche,
ojo or cachete. |
 | Magic is everywhere. At any moment you can have a
magnificent view of the mountains surrounding the
valley and a second later everything vanishes,
wrapped in a thick cloud of smog. Sometimes, even
buildings seem to disappear to the untrained eye. |
 | Every night you can go to sleep to the comforting
sound of the police sirens and the angelic choir
of car alarms being set off everywhere. |
 | The people are very friendly. They don't like to
see anyone alone and always try to make you feel
right at home. Of course, they will ask for some
minor compensation, like your watch or wallet,
but it's a small price to pay in exchange for all
the fun you'll have. A piece of advice: as it is
a local custom, it's unwise to refuse as you may
offend them. |
So, next time you read that phrase, remember all the
wonderful things this city offers and wish they
were here...
