"Hope is the Key" is about corrupt institutions and ideals.
"Hope is the Key" is a reconstruction of the myths of the American Dream.
The idea occurred as a reflection of the fears and angers of each individual
student. The mural does not believe in a universal equality rather it emphasizes
differences in individual struggles against the system that privileges
a few. The image of the flag as a jail cell symbolizes rather than endorses,
how limiting our American society really can be to people outside the mainstream.
Each stripe is a representation of each student's reconstruction:
(1) Censorship
(2) Health
(3) Homelessness
(4) Race Relations
(5) Classism
(6) Sexism.
The myth of the American Dream adds to the imprisonment and frustrations
of those who are not privileged enough to achieve it's allowances.
