GeoCities ate my site, updates coming soon.

Artists do character sketches to prepare for a full blown portrait, and to enhance their abilities. I'm going to do the same thing to work on some weakness in my writing. This thing you are reading is going to become more of a workbook and journal than just a diary. I'm trying to reach a compromise between what I want to do, and my promise to work on this.

Sketch One: The woman at the grocery store

The woman at the grocery store seemed crooked and out of balance. Her skirt, which seemed at the same time too tight and too loose was canted at an odd angle. Her shirt, too, long sleeves not completely tucked in, but half out, and angled opposite to the way her skirt tilted from one side to the other.

Her hair was disheveled, an attempt at a perm which brushed her hair to one side was fighting with random stray hairs that stuck out on the other. Perhaps wisely, she hadn't even attempted to put on makeup.

I stole a glance at her shoes to see, if perhaps they were mismatched. Different colors, or styles, flats and heels mixed together. No, her shoes were the one thing that had been chosen with care, comfortable Keds that nonetheless failed to match her outfit. She must have seen me looking at her, because she turned, startled. I smiled when I caught her eye, and she gave me a wry grin.

She pulled a small child out of a grocery cart, and settled him down on her left hip. As she twisted to balance him everything fell into place: skirt, shirt, hair. Her grin even stretched into a full smile.

I've got a tough thing to do today, when I write Jonathan back. I made my mind up, and I'm not truly happy about it, but it's the right thing to do.

I've had trouble uploading to GeoCities, so this may not make the most sense, but I'll fill in the days as I re-gather them, and get them up.

Later,

GenericJoe
