Monday, December 8, 1997 -- Recovered from the Brain Drain

Sorry for not writing, my week has been something else. I'd like to say that I've had an enjoyable week, full of excitement and joy, and that's why I haven't been writing. No, it was more like I had a week that sucked the life out of me.

At work I have this niggling, frustrating problem that boils down to my lack of knowledge. I've been handed a huge process that I have to handhold, and get going, but I haven't been told what the process does. OH, I know on a macro level what it does, but, when I look at the code, I have no idea why they did that. This would be absolutely no problem if the dang process worked!

If it worked, I'd be done with it early last week, as it is, I'm still working on it today. At least I'm finally on my own with it, and I can justify poking around and trying things, since I'm the only one left to work with it.

I'm reminded of an old AI Koan:

A young hacker was constantly rebooting a machine, trying to get it to work, when the Master Programmer walked by. The Master Programmer said, "Just rebooting the machine, without understanding won't solve the problem." Whereupon the Master Programmer rebooted them machine, and it worked. The young hacker was enlightened.
Probably by the time I understand this problem, it won't be a problem any more.

But wait! That's not all! Azura worked nights every night last week. I thank the good spirits that she got off early Friday night, or we both might have gone crazy. We went out for dinner and a movie (Flubber!) and after that, we were much better.

Mom and Azura had talked about Christmas on Friday, and Mom had even advised Azura that working nights was a bad idea. I know it's bad that Mom would be butting into my affairs, but on the other side, she must like Azura enough to care. So, in a way, it's a good thing.

Flubber was a pretty good movie. Well, if you liked "The Absent Minded Professor", you'll probably like Flubber. There were only three comments I want to make.

  1. The little flying robot maid/PDA thing -- I mean, if the discovery of flight via flubber is gonna be really cool, does it make sense to have something that floats from the beginning? And giving the professor the excuse of a jealous PDA for missing his wedding--come on, the point is he forgot. And he did forget here too, but the PDA gave it a push.
  2. Dancing Flubber. OK why do this? Since when was Flubber intelligent? Maybe Disney just wanted to show of their computer animation ability, but truthfully, I've seen better.
  3. OK, something I liked--there was no attempt to let the US Government have a 'crack at' flubber before our Hero sold it to private business. Score one for the Good guys.
I just wonder what "Son of Flubber" will be like....

On Saturday we were a bit restless, so we decided to go somewhere. Azura wanted to go to the mountains (to see the snow), I wanted to go to the best Used Book Store in NC (which is in Greensboro). Somehow, despite my losing the coin toss, we wound up in Greensboro.

Edwin McKay's books, on Battleground Ave in Greensboro, NC, is the best Used Bookstore I know. [Blatant Plug] They easily have four times the science fiction of any used bookstore in Charlotte, but they also have textbooks, non-fiction (and a romance section equal to or greater than the sci-fi collection (not that I care about that, ok?)) And then, there's the downstairs. Yep video games, computer games, and used Cd's. We were lucky I only spent 20 dollars in there. I got a copy of Ringworld, and Ringworld Engineers by Larry Niven; got the second Wheel of Time book by Robert Jordan; and a book by Simon R. Green...I think that was the name...it was a new author who looked prolific. If I like him, I've got a new one for my list.

Then I took Azura to one of my favourite pizzerias. Pie Works might be a chain, but I've only seen them in Greensboro. Their pizzas have won contests, but the best thing about Pie Works is the topping selection. I've got a copy of the menu around here somewhere, I'll try to get a scan of it soon. There are over 150 toppings, with both the bizarre and mundane. I, boring as always, had pepperoni and ham on my pizza. Neither Azura or I wanted to try the Ostrich, Alligator, or Rattlesnake Sausage. Maybe next time. Maybe not.

Sunday was a pretty relaxing day. I downloaded some new games, and Azura played CastleVania on the Playstation. At least I felt ready for work again today.

Of course, when I got here, I discovered that my mysterious process failed again...so, Let me get back to that....

Much later Well, I delved into it, and worked with it, and couldn't find anything wrong. I finally understood the procedure and let it execute. What luck, it executed fine... How's that for irony?
