The Cataloging Section Business Meeting followed an agenda which began with Old Business. Kay Teel introduced herself as the incoming Moderator of the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Section and conducted the meeting at a brisk pace. She introduced Patricia Siska, who recorded the session. Kay thanked Sherman Clarke for moderating, and Arno Kastner for proposing conference Session 9, "False Economies: Balancing Quality and the Bottom Line in Providing Access to Our Collections," sponsored by the Cataloging Section and Academic Library Division, held Monday April 7. She also thanked Sherman for organizing and conducting the Cataloging Problems Discussion Group Meeting, held Sunday April 6, and the Art NACO meeting, held Tuesday, April 8. She introduced Daniel Starr, who is the Cataloging Advisory Committee (CAC) Chair.
Several items under New Business followed. Patricia Siska was approved by those in attendance at the meeting to serve as the new Vice-Moderator/ Moderator-Elect of the Cataloging Section. Kay expressed thanks to Madelyn Cook for assisting with the development of the Cataloging Section web page, and the University of Arizona for providing disk space for the page (which may be found at: http://w3.arizona.edu/~arlis/). Daniel Starr, as CAC Chair, said that he would post MARBI proposals, or a link to them, to the web page, and to ARLIS-L, to solicit membership feedback. Daniel is currently serving as CC:DA representative. Patricia Siska is outgoing MARBI representative, and Elizabeth O'Keefe is incoming MARBI representative. Kay developed the webpage, and currently maintains it. She asked who should be responsible for the future maintenance of the web page, and said that she was interested in continuing to maintain it. Elizabeth O'Keefe asked if webpage maintenance required knowledge of markup language. The answer was yes, it is useful to know, but also that HTML markup is easy to learn. Liping Song volunteered to become a "web-intern" and help maintain the web page. The membership agreed to this arrangement.
Kay then announced that a Cataloging Problems Discussion Group Notebook, maintained by Sherman Clarke was not prepared for this year's conference. Sherman said that he would be glad to send information on specific cataloging topics upon request.
The Cataloging Section was charged by the ARLIS Board, prior to this meeting, to create a database of authorized headings for institutions to which ARLIS members belong. A Database Authorities Working Group has been formed which includes the following members: Kay Teel, Penney De Pas (ex officio), Shera Hube (liaison to ARLIS/NA Headquarters); and volunteers, Linda Andrews, Madelyn Cook, Linda Cuccurullo, Marilyn Czerniejewski, Emily Roth, Liping Song, Annette Weir, and Lynda White.
Kay then issued a call for Cataloging Section session proposals for the 1998 conference. Several proposal ideas were discussed, including the following: 1) Elisa Lanzi will re-submit a proposal rejected last year, regarding Archival Collections Cataloging, and mentioned a new proposal about the VRA-Core Data Record. She is interested in obtaining VRA and Cataloging Section sponsorship; 2) Linda Kruger expressed interest in a session on Auction Catalogs; 3) Elizabeth O'Keefe suggested the topic, Filtering Expert Systems; 4) Tim Shipe suggested a session on Cataloging Remote Electronic Resources. He said that he could develop a proposal for the program. (After the meeting, Linda Cuccurullo volunteered to moderate the session.) Kay Teel said she could suggest speakers; 5) Sherman Clarke said that ARLIS should take advantage of meeting together with the Visual Resources Association in Philadelphia. He suggested a joint informal Cataloging Discussion Group Meeting; 6) Daniel Starr suggested a session on Cataloging Individual Works of Art. He also mentioned that SCIPIO, RLIN's auction and dealer's catalog database is migrating in June, and that it might be useful to have a session about it. Kay concluded the meeting by encouraging members to pursue the session ideas presented, and to submit session proposals by May 31.
