This two volume set wonderfully and succinctly covers demographics, psychosocial aspects, leisure, etiquette, and traveler information. Features: metric conversions table.

Gale encyclopedia of multicultural America (Vols. 1-2). (1995). New York, NY: Gale Research, Inc.
This two volume set focuses on the hyphenated Americans and their assimilation and contribution to the American life. Specific contributors (inventors, actors, etc.) are also listed. Features: general index of terms and ethnic groups and contact information for organizations, associations, museums, and research centers.

Gall, T. L. (Ed.). (1998). Worldmark encyclopedia of cultures and daily life (Vols. 1-4). Detroit, MI: Gale Research, Inc.
This four volume set truly gives a feeling for the culture by thoroughly describing psychosocial and leisure aspects and rites of passage. In addition, each culture is profiled in the native country and as the hyphenated American representative. Features: black and white photographs of people.

This series covers many cultures and makes for informative pleasure reading. Features: black and white pictures and maps, suggested readings, and term index.

Levinson, D. (Ed.). (1991). The encyclopedia of world cultures (Vols. 1-6). Boston, MA: G. K. Hall.
This six volume set covers demographics, psychosocial and family aspects, and health beliefs. Features: maps and is also available on CD-ROM.

Mothershead, A. B. (1982). Dining customs around the world. Garret Park, MD: Garret Park Press.
This book succinctly describes dining (and its socializing) customs and etiquette of 53 countries. Features: sketches of maps and a few miscellaneous drawings, recipes, and an index to food and beverages.

Peoples of the world: [region] (1992). (Vols. 1-7). Detroit, MI: Gale Research, Inc.
This seven volume set briefly describes demographics and family life. Features: suggested readings, short glossary, black and white maps and pictures of people, and an index by culture with its topics.

Thompson, S. E. (Ed.). (1998). Holiday symbols: A guide…as observed in the United States and around the world. Detroit, MI: Omnigraphics, Inc.
Nearly all aspects of holidays are described. Each listing includes the type of holiday, symbols and colors of the holiday, origins of the holiday, and related holidays.

Gaw A. C. (2001). Concise guide to cross-cultural psychiatry. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Publishing.
Only profiles one group, Native Americans. However, the other chapters are rich in cultural information by describing culture-bound syndromes; cross-cultural psychopharmacology (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, & pharmacogenetics); cultural context of non-adherance to psychotropic medicines; & chapters on culture & psychotherapy, psychiatry, & the DSM-IV. Features: easily fits in a lab coat pocket, glossary of culture-bound syndromes in DSM-IV, an annotated bibliography, & a cultural glossary.

Huff R. M. & Kline M. V. (1999). Promoting health in multicultural populations. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.
This text gives a basic background to the reader in culturally-relevant health promotion & disease prevention & separately profiles various populations. Cultures: Hispanic/Latino, African Americans, American Indian & Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, & Pacific Islanders. Eahc cultural profile includes an overview, health promotion planning/accessing needs, a case study (& a thorough dissection of it), & tips for working with that culture. These tips cover cultural competence, health beliefs & practices, program planning considerations, needs assessment, intervention considerations, & evaluation considerations.

Part of a series on culture and professional practice. The book gives a background about culture and mental health and physical medicine. Features: a short index of terms and tables.

Nader K., Dubrow N., & Stamm BH. (1999). Honoring differences: Cultural issues in the treatment of trauma and loss. Philadelphia, PA: Brunner/Mazel.
An interesting read, it provides some nuggets of cultural information for therapists working with cultures impacted by severe trauma & loss, such as war refugees. Suggestions, solutions, & tips for working with these clients are occasionally provided. Cultures: African Americans, various Native American groups & Native American themes, Mexicans & Mexican Americans, Southeast Asian Americans (Cambodians, Laotians, Vietnamese), Africans, North Caucasians (such as those minorities in Dagestan, Kalmykia, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkar, Karachai-Cherkass, Adygeia, Georgia (South Ossetia, Abkhazia), the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Kosovo, Vojvodina, Montenegro)), Israelis, & Palestinians.

Paniagua F. A. (1998). Assessing & treating culturally diverse clients: A practical guide. (2nd ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.
This text provides excellent, specific advice for mental health practitioners on treating different cultural groups. The information would be of interest to OTs working in mental health, too. There is a brief superb chapter on preventing attrition of these clients--some of these tips can be used by healthcare practitioners in any field. It also discusses biases in mental health epidemiology & cautionary advice in using culturally-biased instruments. Cultures: African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, & American Indians.

Purnell, L. D. & Paulanka, B. J. (1998). Transcultural health care: A culturally competent approach. Philadelphia, PA: F. A. Davis Company.
This book describes in detail demographics, taboo issues, biocultural ecology, health beliefs, barriers to healthcare, and how healthcare providers are viewed. Features: background information chapters, a few black and white pictures, case studies, study questions, and for some reason, half of the cultures are only available on a separate computer disk.

Spector, R. E. (1996). Cultural diversity in health and illness (4th ed.). Stamford, CT: Appleton & Lange.
This book covers health demographics, health practices, and cultural communication. A few cultures are profiled: African Americans, American Indians, Aleuts, & Eskimos, Asians/Pacific Islanders, European (White) Americans, & Hispanic Americans. I spotted a few glaring errors about Ramadan (the Islamic fasting month) in a section which the author noted was written by a student who converted to Islam. Features: background information chapters, black and white maps and tables, suggested readings, resources, numerous appendices, and index of terms and ethnic groups.

Spector, R. E. (1996). Guide to heritage assessment & health traditions. Stamford, CT: Appleton & Lange.
This valuable booklet provides many questions that you can use to assess a culture's health traditions in depth. It also has a short section on health traditions--how the people maintain health, protect health or prevent illness, & restore health. The nations listed in the latter are: Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Columbia, Croatia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Haiti, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Prussia, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela, & Vietnam.

Sue, D. W. (1981). Counseling the culturally different: Theory and practice. New York, NY: John Wiley & Sons.
Part of a series in counseling and human development. The book gives a background about culture and counseling and profiles selected cultures. Features: case studies, study questions, vignettes with commentary, and name and subject indexes.

Tseng W-S. (2001). Handbook of cultural psychiatry. San Diego, CA: Academic Press.
A pleasant read, it covers a multitude of therapist & mental health topics, with various cultural case studies, statistics, & photographs sprinkled throughout.

Galanti, G. (1997). Caring for patients from different cultures: Case studies from American hospitals (2nd ed.). Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press.
Case studies are listed under various health topics. Features: well-organized bibliographies and subject indexes.

Qureshi, B. (1989). Transcultural medicine: Dealing with patients from different cultures. Boston, MA: Kluwer Academic Publishers.
This book features case studies and articles on various cultural health topics. Features: a few short case studies with commentaries and an index of terms.

Other Resources for Information

Guide to multicultural resources. (1995). Madison, WI: Praxis Publications.
This book lists contact information and description of cultural organizations, media, publishers, and more in the U.S. Features: selected statistics and six indexes.

Hirsch, E. D., Jr., Kett, J. F., & Trefil, J. (1993). The dictionary of cultural literacy (2nd ed.). Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Co.
Besides cultural behaviors, the knowledge that a culture stores within its people help define a unique cultural identity. This dictionary contains American cultural knowledge. (The same first author also put out an concise and selective encyclopedic series by grade level of American cultural literacy.) Features: black and white pictures and an index of terms.

MacFarlane, T. (Ed.). (1997). Encyclopedia of associations: International organizations. Detroit, MI: Gale.
This book lists contact information and description of international organizations. Features: address and currency abbreviations list, keyword list, information about the organization’s library, any publications by the organization, and convention/meeting information, and a separate index volume.

Melton, J. G. (1993). Directory of religious organizations in the United States (3rd ed.). Detroit, MI: Gale Research, Inc.
This book lists contact information for religious organizations, media, publishers, and more. Features: no websites are listed in the contact information and it has four indexes.

Phillips, T. Y. (Ed.). (1999). Encyclopedia of associations: Regional, state, and local organizations. Detroit, MI: The Gale Group.
Contains much of the same information for the Encyclopedia of associations series for associations at regional (inter- and intrastate), state, county, city, neighborhood, and local levels. Features: name and keyword index.

Sheets, T. E. (Ed.). (1999). Encyclopedia of Associations (35th ed.). Detroit, MI: Gale Group.
Contains much of the same information for the Encyclopedia of associations series for organizations in the U.S.

Wynar, L. R. (1978). Guide to ethnic museums, libraries, and archives in the United States. Kent, OH: Kent State University.
I didn’t have local access to the book, but it looks interesting.

Look up embassies based in the U.S. for more information. In my experience, embassy staff are quite helpful and friendly.

Supposedly, ethnic newspapers are housed in Chicago at the Center for Research Libraries.

Supposedly, Queen’s College offers an Ethnic Materials Information Exchange.
