Frederick Exley was born in Watertown, New York, on March 28, 1929. The son of Earl and Charlotte (Merkley) Exley, he had three siblings: a twin sister, Frances; an older brother, William, and a younger sister, Constance. Exley attended Watertown High School, where he played both football and basketball. He went on to briefly attend the predental program at Hobart College in Geneva, New York, before transferring to the University of Southern California. Exley attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Southern California in 1953. Exley was married twice. His first marriage, to Francena Fritz, lasted from 1967 to 1970. They had one daughter, Pamela Rae. His second marriage, to Nancy Glenn, lasted from 1970 to 1974. They also had one daughter, Alexandra. Exley was nominated for a National Book Award, and was the recipient of the William Faulkner Award. He received the National Institute of Arts and Letters Rosenthal Award. He also won a Playboy Silver medal for the best nonfiction piece of 1974. In addition, he received a Rockefeller Foundation grant, a Harper-Saxton Fellowship, and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Frederick Exley died in 1992. ©
