The age-old argument of the artist has always been this-Do we make art for art's sake, or do we seek recognition from society? Are we creating because we must, or because we must be known? You could argue either point. There is an undeniable allure in becoming well-known. It is a basic facet of human nature. Without it, there would be no beauty pageants, award shows, Nobel prizes, articles, or television shows. This quest for celebrity is a perfectly acceptable goal, and can be healthy and self-affirming. But how far should you go? What compromises do we make in our art to achieve that goal? This two part feature will examine the price of fame, and of obscurity on your art. To participate, e-mail us at BFlyJanisAlice.com. Thank you, and we look forward to your input. |
