Uncle Willard and Mt. Hayes, Alaska

Mt. Hayes, Alaska (some 13,000 ft.) is named after the artist's great uncle, Charles Willard Hayes, who was an explorer and geologist in the late 19th century. Betsy and Ed took a trip to Alaska in August of 2005, but were unable to see Mt. Hayes due to dense smoke from Alaskan wildfires. Another trip must be made! This painting was executed by the artist at the Cultural Arts Center in Columbus, Ohio, in the fall of 2003. The various stages of the painting were videotaped by painting instructor Tracy Steinbrook. More information about Mt. Hayes can be found at the Hayes Museum on the grounds of Hayes Arboretum, in Richmond, Indiana.
