Bike 30 miles incl. 3MB and 21WT am incl. 42 mins at HR 160-165. This morning's music selection included Leather Strip's "Legacy of Hate and Lust" (try getting up at 5am after getting home from the track at 9:30pm the night before and riding hard while listening to Moby. I bet you can't)...and 6 WT pm easy. Run 6 miles (4noon, 2pm with Little M.)

January 11, 2001.
Bike 30 miles incl. 3MB and 27WT easy (21am and 6pm)This morning's music: Neil Young's "Rust Never Sleeps". I'm trying to rest up a bit for the race on Saturday yet still satisfying my perverse requirement to log bike miles. Run 5 miles incl. 4x200 (35s) 3x600m (1:51,1:55,1:52) 4x200m (36,36,33,31).

January 12, 2001.
Bike 25 miles incl. 3MB and 22WT easy. This morning's music: I'm still stuck on Neil Young's "Rust Never Sleeps". Sure, his hygiene is questionable but he is Canadian and the Winnipeg Marathon course goes right past his high school. I'm cautiously optimistic about tommorrow...in fact, during the ride to work this morning, my legs felt almost springy. The hoar frost on the trees and the ice fog was a nice touch. I have cleverly gone to work today on my day off to remove the temptation of going to the track with the crew to do a transition work out. More good news: since the track club is broke the trip is not an over night one and there will be no 1500m for me and I will still get in my long sunday run. I've finally strung together 3 weeks of hard post-flu training. Next week is an easy week, thankfully. WTS. I need to swim once this week. I need sleep. Run 3 miles. Swim 1k (only through blatantly rounding up.)

January 13, 2001.
Run 7 miles incl. warmup and warm down. 800m in 2:16. I thought 2:10 would be marvy, 2:15 was likely, and I would slash my wrists if I ran 2:20. I split the first 400m in 65 which was exactly what I wanted. The field split between 400 and 600m and I had a lapse of concentration and tucked in the slower half of the pack....it was comfortable. In retrospect, I should have been much more aggressive. Of course, I can say that now...I'm not in the throes of anaerobic collapse. Little M ran 2:59.2...about 1.4 seconds off of her outdoor best, despite racing 2 age divisions and about a foot and a half over her head. 6 hours of driving for 2 minutes of racing.

January 14, 2001.
Run 20 miles incl. last 4 miles with Little M. This felt suspiciously easy.

Bike-run; Bike 42 miles WT VG. Run 8 miles. WTS. Anders/Stuey was in a snow ball fight today and committed the grave tactical error of engaging in a frontal assualt on a fortified position. He took an iceball to the head, giving him a mild concussion and maybe a small fracture in his nose. Nothing was dislodged so his nose still looks Ok and will remain so as long as we doesn't bang it in the next few days. Maybe we should've got an aquarium (or another daughter) instead.

Bike 25 miles (3MB, 22WT am incl. 41 mins at HR 160-65). This morning's music: Clash's London Calling to warmup, and Nitzer Ebb, Chemlab, Hate Dept., and back to the Clash to suffer. Run 8 miles (4noon 4pm incl. 2x5x200m (34x5) (34x4,32) Kick 400m in 60.56 (so close) Little M. kicked 200m in 35.27). Groovy. WTS. I'm racing (again) and wifey-poo and I are chaperoning the track club this weekend. Take a look at Anders' face and ask yourself if you would trust your children with me. Anywho, Anders is back at school and thinks the colour of his face is "cool". The principal snapped a picture and now Stuey is the School's "Don't Throw Iceballs" Posterboy. His nose isn't broken. Back to running: I get to race the 800m in "master" instead of "open" meaning that instead of being pummeled by 18 year olds I get to do some pummeling myself. I'm going to try to taper a bit. Hee, hee.

January 24, 2001.
Bike 32 miles (3MB, 23WT am incl. 42 mins at HR 160-65 and 6WTpm easy). This morning's music: Pointed Sticks (Vancouver, circa 1980/81 (anyone? anyone?) to warmup, and Skinny Puppy Singles Collection to suffer. Run 6 miles (4noon, 2pm). Swim 2k.

January 26, 2001.
Bike 20 miles WT am very easy. Run 6 miles pm incl. 800m in 2:17. Poop. Split 400m in 64.8 and just held on. I'm not happy with my second hlaf despite being fully aware of keeping my concentration intact between 400 and 600m. My last 200m was a real bear. Oh yeah, I won the masters/ sub masters event but who cares? Does Dr. Steve realize I have no idea what he is yelling at me when I'm racing? Little M. hauled in her 1000m. She raced 3 age divisions above her (against 15 year olds), finished in the middle of the pack in 3:43, and got several gasps and enthusiastic applause from the crowd...she is only 4 foot nothing and still about 55lbs. Racing older girls is quite good for her because she is garunteed a fast time. As Dr. Steve says, "racing builds courage". When she races in her own division, she makes the other girls cry.

January 27, 2001.
Run 6 miles pm incl. 600m in 1:??. I didn't want to know. Racing 600m in a december all-comers meet is vastly different from a university meet in January. What does this mean? I was handed my head. It was ugly. Anywho, Little M. ran 1500m in 5:52 finishing 5th overall in just one division over her head.

Bike 24 miles (3MB, 21WT am incl. 40 mins at HR 160-65. This was slightly easier. Music: Bowie's Singles Collection to warmup and Rob Zombie (tres fromage), Die Krupps and Leather Strip to suffer to.) Run 9 miles (4noon, 5pm incl. 15x200m (35,35,35,34,34,35,36,34,34,34,34,34,34,33,33 short rests, no kick tonight, I'm stale)WTS. I had Dr.Steve sign my medical certificate for the Quebec Double. He is a doctor, just a dentist doctor, and I couldn't get hold of the cats' vet.

January 31, 2001.
Bike 21 miles (3MB, 21WT (11WT am incl. 20 mins at HR 150-55. I'm flogging a dead horse this morning. My legs are empty. I'm hungry....for food. REAL FOOD!!! Not a power bar. I want dead animal flesh. I want fat. I went upstairs and made 3 egg, cheese, and beef burritos. 10WTpm incl. 10mins up to HR 165. Not satisfied with the very clear signals my body was giving me this morning, I had another crack at myself. I'm still trashed. I'm obsessive. Run 6 miles (4noon, 2pm).WTS.

February 2, 2001.
Bike 24 miles (3MB 21WT incl. 40 mins at HR 160-65). I'm feeling just ducky this morning. Go figure. This morning's music: excerpts from the 2 "Dazed and Confused" soundtrack discs....a bit of a break from the usual "sturm und drang" industrial. A friend of mine describes the 70s as a blackhole for music. Outside of Bowie, Iggy, and the birth of punk, he's right. Run 6 miles(4noon 2pm).

February 3, 2001.

February 4, 2001.
Bike 20 miles...last 4 miles with Little M. "Death March" is the only way to describe it. It took 4 Coronas and 2 Hog's Heavens to make me forget about it...especially the thrashing I took at the hands of a 10 year old girl. I'll get her next week.
