Healers
By Kristjan Brezovnik
"Hey, Faith, did you hear?" Raelee asked when Faith came to the Bronze from patrol.
"What?"
"We're getting more students tomorrow."
Faith raised an eyebrow.
"We are?"
"Yes. You remember that school that caught fire last week?"
"Yeah?"
"Some of them are coming here."
"Tough luck."
Raelee smiled.
"Yes."
"Do you know how many?"
"No."
"I guess we'll see tomorrow."
"Yes." Then she frowned. "Do you think Dawn's mom was responsible for the fire?"
Faith thought for a moment.
"I don't know. Could be. I mean, we only got her, but not Godfrey." She looked at Lara. "Can you sense witches?"
"I can sense if they're touched by the supernatural, but I don't necessarily know if they're witches or something else."
"Oh. I guess we'll see."
"Do you think, Godfrey, would try to kill them?"
"I don't know. Has Willow mentioned a power point?"
"There are several around Sunnydale."
Faith frowned.
"I guess we'll have to follow them and hope we can get Godfrey before he blows them up."
"Yes."
"Oh, Dennis was looking for you," Raelee said.
"Where is he?" Faith asked and looked around.
"He's dancing with Heidi."
Faith looked on the dance floor.
"Oh." She looked back at Raelee and Lara. "Mind if join you?"
"No."
"Okay. I'll just get myself a drink."
Faith got herself a drink and then joined Raelee and Lara again.
"So, how's the love life?" she asked. "Have you done the deed?"
Raelee and Lara looked at her, puzzled. Then Raelee realized what Faith was talking about and she blushed.
"No," she said.
Then Lara realized it as well and she blushed too.
Faith grinned.
"There's no hurry," she said. "Just make sure that at least the first time your parents are not at home."
Raelee and Lara blushed even more.
"Hi, Faith."
Faith looked up.
"Hey, guys," she said as Dennis and Heidi sat. "Raelee says you've been looking for me."
Dennis nodded.
"Yes. This weekend is the anniversary of Ballet's death."
Faith's face became serious.
"Really?"
"Yes."
Faith thought for a moment.
"Do you know where she's buried?"
"I think so. I mean, I know the place, but we'd still have to find the cemetery and stuff."
"Oh. I think I can persuade Cordelia to give us a ride."
"Okay. It's along ride, so we should start early."
Faith nodded.
"Okay."
"Hey," Faith said, smiling, when she and Cordelia met in their dreams.
"Hey," Cordelia responded, also smiling, and they kissed.
"I have news," Faith said when they broke the kiss. "This weekend is the anniversary of Ballet's death."
Cordelia's face became serious.
"Really?"
"Yes. Dennis knows where she's buried and I thought we'd go visit her."
"Sure," Cordelia agreed. "I mean, I didn't know her personally, but I know how much she meant to you."
Faith smiled.
"Are you going to drive?"
"Okay. I'll come home on Thursday and we can go on Friday morning. I suppose it's a long drive."
Faith frowned.
"I don't know, I didn't ask. I'll tell you tomorrow."
"Okay. And how are things in Sunny D?"
"Lousy as usually, when you're not around."
Cordelia smiled and gave her a peck on the nose.
"I miss you too."
Faith smiled.
"Remember Dawn's mom?"
"The vamp?"
"Yeah. Her butler burned down a school."
"He's going through with the plan?"
"We think so. Dawn saw him back in town and I found out today that the witches are coming here."
"Are you sure there are witches among the students?"
"We think so. Lara's gonna turn on her radar."
"She can sense witches?"
"No, but she can sense if they're touched by the supernatural."
"Oh. Be careful."
Faith smiled.
"Always," she said and gave Cordelia a peck on the nose.
"Though I guess we'll have to skip your birthday party then," Cordelia said.
Faith groaned, but then she got an idea.
"Then we'll have a joint birthday party next weekend, on your birthday."
Cordelia smiled.
"Sounds great."
Faith smiled back.
"It does, doesn't it? Let's go plan."
"Okay, here they come," Raelee said. She looked at Lara. "Ready?"
Lara nodded.
They observed the two buses and the students who disembarked.
"They're here," Lara said and walked toward the crowd of new students, Raelee following her.
Lara concentrated on the supernatural vibrations and she soon detected which students were touched by the supernatural. She didn't say anything, but several of the students looked at her curiously, obviously feeling that she was touched by the supernatural.
"Well?" Faith asked when Lara and Raelee returned.
"There are seven of them," Lara reported. "They know one another."
"Well, that makes it easier."
"What do we do now?" Raelee asked.
Faith scratched her head.
"I don't know." She looked at Lara. "You go to them and tell them you're a witch?"
Lara shook her head.
"We should wait."
"Your call. We'll make a plan in the afternoon, but I think you should observe them."
Lara nodded.
"We will."
Raelee smiled.
"We'll see you later."
"Okay."
Lara and Raelee left and Faith stared after them, thinking.
"Hi, guys," Faith said when she and Alice came to the park in the afternoon.
"Hi," Renee said.
"Did Lara and Raelee tell you?"
"Yes," Monique said.
"Any ideas?"
"First, we have to find out which power point they plan to gather around," Dennis said.
"I'll ask Willow later," Faith said.
"Did Dawn say anything?" Raelee asked.
Faith thought for a moment.
"She said that Godfrey came back and was searching for her mom. She followed him around, but he didn't do anything suspicious. Except feed. And she said that he sleeps at a different place every night, so she can't tells us where he is."
"Why can't he be an ordinary stupid vamp?" Monique said and Faith grinned.
"Because then my life would be too easy," she said.
"And we obviously can't have that," Dennis said and grinned at her.
Faith grinned back.
"Obviously." She sighed. "I'll go to Willow later and ask her about which power point they are most likely to choose. I'll go there then and check out the place."
"And hope it's the right one," Heidi said.
Faith grinned again.
"Yes. We'll go there in the evening and hide."
"Sounds like a plan," Dennis said.
"Yeah. Oh, by the way, my birthday party is gonna be one week later."
"Doesn't Cordelia have a party then?" Monique asked.
"Yes. We're gonna have it together since Cordelia is taking me and Dennis to Ballet's grave this weekend."
"Who's Ballet?"
"A very good friend of mine. She was like a big sister to me." She looked at Dennis. "To both of us."
"Yes," Dennis agreed.
"Sorry," Monique said.
"Yeah, me too," Faith said.
"Hey, Giles," Faith said when she came to Giles' place. "Is Willow… Oh, hi, Willow."
"Hi, Faith."
"I need your help. Remember when I told you about Godfrey?"
"Yes."
"It seems he's going to go through with Mrs Ashcroft's plan. And today, Lara detected seven possible witches among the students from the burned-down school. I need to know which power point they're most likely to choose."
"Sure," Willow said and looked at Giles. "Do you have a map of Sunnydale?"
"Yes, I do," Giles said and fetched the map.
"I'm aware of at least nine power points in and around Sunnydale," Willow said as she spread the map. "Beside the Hellmouth. Where was the school?"
"Here," Faith said and pointed at a town.
Willow ran her finger along the line between that town and Sunnydale.
"Yes, here's one. It's not too far from the road and they'd probably be able to feel it, it's the third strongest I know of."
Faith looked.
"I think I know where that is."
"You can't miss it," Willow said, "it's marked with a flat round stone."
"Okay, thanks. I'll go check it out now." She looked at Giles. "Giles, we're gonna go there in the evening and see what happens."
"Be careful."
"We will."
In the evening, Faith and her friends went to the power point. They hid and waited. And so did Godfrey. Faith considered taking him out, but he was too far away and he would have noticed her if she tried to sneak up on him. But at least she now knew where he would come from. And the witches as well. Faith didn't know what kind of ritual they were performing, but she figured they were quite powerful as the air around them seemed to shimmer and she could feel magic. At least that's what she thought.
Godfrey was apparently satisfied that it was the correct power point and he soon left. Faith hesitated for a few moments and then followed him. Unfortunately, she soon lost him. She searched for him for a while and she even went to Mrs Ashcroft's place, but he was not there. So she went to the Bronze and waited there for the others.
"There you are," Renee said when they arrived at the Bronze. "Why did you leave?"
"I wanted to kill Godfrey, but I lost him."
"Oh."
Faith looked at Lara.
"Do you know what they were doing?"
"I think so. The first part was praising the Goddess, then they were… I don't know. Like when you charge a battery."
Faith nodded.
"I know what you mean."
"And then they were thanking the Goddess. I'll go to Mr Giles tomorrow after Renee takes Hope home."
"Okay."
"Hi, Giles," Faith said the next day when she came to him after taking Alice home from the park.
"Hello, Faith."
"Did Lara tell you about the witch… em, wiccans?"
"Yes."
"So they're good, right?"
"Yes, I believe so."
"Good. We can use all the help we can get. We're going back tonight."
"Be careful."
"Always, Giles. Cordelia would be severely pissed if I died."
Giles raised an eyebrow.
"I'm sure."
"He's coming," Dawn reported when she came to Faith.
"Okay. Did the others see you?"
"Yes. But he's not alone."
"What?" Faith said, worried. "How many vamps are with him?"
"Seven. They're carrying the explosives and the shovels."
Faith thought for a moment.
"Okay. Tell the others that we'll attack them as soon as they start digging. Then go watch when the witches come."
Dawn nodded and quickly left.
Faith followed her with her eyes as she went to the three pairs and then on to scout.
Godfrey soon arrived with his helpers, who immediately started digging. Faith decided not to waste time and she attacked. The vamps quickly spotted her and they attacked her. Raelee, Lara, Renee, Monique, Dennis and Heidi attacked as well and Lara quickly levitated the explosives away from the power point. The vamps were too distracted by the fight to notice.
Faith noticed Dawn was returning and she guessed that the witches were coming. It was definitely not a good thing. So far, only three vamps were gone, one killed by her, one by Raelee, helped by Lara, and one by Renee, Monique, Dennis and Heidi. Three down, five to go. She was relieved, though, that Godfrey didn't leave, at least she wouldn't have to search for him. Unfortunately, even though he was slow and, she thought, stupid, he was a damn gorilla and he could take some serious beating. And that fact that he looked like a clown in his butler's outfit was somewhat distracting Faith, which was definitely a bad thing.
She saw Raelee stake another vamp with Lara's help. Four down, four to go. She glanced at the approaching witches. They apparently didn't seem scared. In fact, they seemed eager to join the fight, judging by the fact that they were running toward them. She shook hear head, they needed to talk. She ducked to avoid a vamp's blow, but when she got up and her stake hit the place where the vamp's heart should be, the vamp was already dust, courtesy of Dawn.
"Thanks," Faith said.
Dawn nodded and returned to the fight.
"No, not the demon-killing spell!" Lara called at the witches when they arrived and joined the fight. "One of them is on our side."
There was a bit of confusion, but the witch in question apparently complied. Faith looked around and saw that only Godfrey and another vamp were left. And Godfrey was trying to make a run for it.
"Lara, the butler!" Faith called and a moment later, Godfrey was flying through the air toward her.
Faith quickly sidestepped and then staked him while he was still in the process of crash landing. She looked around and saw that all vamps were gone.
"Nice work, guys," she said and looked at the witches. "You guys obviously know about demons."
"Yes," one of them said. "What's going on, why were they here?"
"They wanted to blow you up."
The witch frowned.
"Why?"
Faith shrugged.
"I don't know. Her mom," she said, pointing at Dawn, "wanted you dead for some reason. We killed her, but her butler, that was the gorilla in the tux, he obviously wanted to go through with the plan." She looked at Lara. "Where are the explosives?"
"Over there," Lara said and pointed at a distant pile.
"Oh."
"You're a wiccan," one of the witches observed.
"Yes," Lara said.
The witch looked around.
"She's obviously a vampire," he said and Dawn quickly morphed back to her normal face. "And what are you?" he asked Faith. "You're not a witch, but there is something strange about you?"
"I'm a Slayer."
The boy frowned.
"I think I heard that term before. What does it mean?"
"It means I was called to kill vamps." She pointed at her friends. "They're helping me out."
"Oh."
"Anyway, my name is Faith. The vamp is Dawn and those are Lara, Raelee, Heidi, Dennis, Monique and Renee."
"Hi. I'm Jim and they are Melanie, Linda, Tom, Danielle, Lasse and Hanifa."
"Hi. Listen, we're going to the Bronze, if you want to join us. Or are you gonna, em, charge your batteries?"
The witches laughed.
"We'll charge our batteries," Jim said.
"Okay. We'll talk tomorrow then."
"Okay."
"See you, guys," Faith said and started walking toward the pile of explosives. "Lara, can you do some trick to make the explosives harmless?"
Lara thought about it.
"I don't know any suitable spells," she said.
"Can't you just squeeze them or something?" Monique asked.
Lara thought about it.
"Yes, I could."
When they got to the pile of explosives, everyone, including Lara, took shelter. Lara then concentrated and the pile started to shrink. The explosives started to go off, but Lara enveloped them with a bubble. She concentrated some more and the explosions stopped. She released the bubble and a pile of ashes fell to the ground.
"Nice work," Faith said as Raelee hugged Lara to give her some of her personal strength. "Let's go. Can you walk?"
Lara nodded.
"Yes."
"Okay then."
"Ta-da!" Faith said when she and Cordelia met in their dreams.
"You killed him?" Cordelia asked.
"Yep."
"I knew you could do it," Cordelia said and kissed Faith deeply.
"Talk about a reward," Faith said breathlessly when they stopped kissing.
"Like I need an incentive to kiss you," Cordelia pouted.
Faith grinned sheepishly.
"I know you don't. So, you're coming tomorrow?"
"Yes. At least I won't be stuck cleaning up the mess."
"The mess?" Faith asked curiously.
"Yes. Angel and Wes are going after some big slimy demon who's name I can't pronounce tomorrow, which means that there's going to be some serious cleaning afterwards."
"Glad I could bail you out," Faith said and gave Cordelia a peck on the nose.
"I'm eternally grateful. Now let's cuddle, I missed you."
"We cuddled last night."
Cordelia stared at her.
"Your point?"
Faith chuckled.
"Sorry, I don't know what came over me," she said and picked up Cordelia, who shrieked, surprised. "Let the cuddling begin!"
"But only cuddling, we've got a long drive tomorrow."
"We'll let Dennis drive."
Cordelia pretended to think for a moment.
"Okay."
The drive was long, but they finally got to the town.
"Em, why does it feel like we've gone back in time?" Faith asked as she looked around.
"Because we have?" Cordelia suggested.
"They look like Amish," Dennis said.
"Amish?" Faith and Cordelia echoed, glancing at each other.
"Ballet was Amish?" Faith asked.
"She sure as hell didn't look Amish to me," Cordelia said.
"You better drive through and stop somewhere outside the town," Faith suggested, noticing the glances they were receiving.
"Look, the cemetery is also that way," Dennis said.
"Park on the other side of it."
"Okay," Cordelia said.
When the car stopped, they got up and each took a rose from the trunk. Then they went to the cemetery.
"What did you say her name was again?" Cordelia asked Dennis.
"Anna Rabin."
"Okay, let's see if we can find her grave."
They've been searching for a while, ignoring the curious glances from the people. Finally, an older man approached them.
"Can I help you?" he asked and all three could detect coldness in his voice.
"Em, yes," Faith said. "We're looking for the grave of Anna Rabin. We were told she was buried here."
The man's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"We weren't around when she died and we couldn't attend the funeral, so we came now."
"I see," the man said, now eyeing them in an almost hostile way. "She is not buried here, she had been banished."
Faith and Cordelia looked at each other, surprised, and then at Dennis.
"Why?" Dennis asked.
"Because of her way of life," the man said and left.
"I'm not taking his word for it," Cordelia said.
"Me neither," Faith said. "Let's check out the rest of the cemetery."
"Okay, zip," Cordelia said when they met again.
"I guess he was telling the truth," Dennis said.
"He said she wasn't buried here," Faith said. "So where is she buried? Dennis?"
Dennis shrugged.
"This is where they delivered the body," he said.
"Okay, he said she had been banished, so they didn't bury her in the cemetery," Cordelia said. "Perhaps they buried her outside the cemetery."
Dennis and Faith glanced at each other.
"Let's check it out," Faith said.
"Okay," Dennis said.
They split and searched the surrounding area. There didn't seem to be any grave, but they decided to look anyway, just in case.
"I got it!" Dennis finally called and the three girls ran to him.
"Where?" Cordelia asked, puzzled, when she saw nothing but grass and bushes.
"Right here," Dennis said and moved a bush.
"Oh."
"It's like they wanted it to remain hidden and forgotten."
"But obviously not entirely forgotten," Faith said and pointed at a fresh bouquet of flowers.
"Looks like we're about to have another visitor," Dennis said and the girls turned.
"Now what?" Cordelia said, annoyed, when she saw a young man approach them with a not too pleasant look on his face.
"Can I help you?" the man asked when he got to them.
"No, we already found what we've been looking for."
The man glanced at the hidden grave.
"Her grave?"
"Yes."
"You knew her?"
"Yes. You?"
The man seemed to get a bit uncomfortable at the question.
"Yes," he admitted.
"Is she buried here because she had been banished?" Faith asked.
The man seemed to get even more uncomfortable.
"Yes."
"Why was she banished?" Dennis asked. "The man we met before said that because of her way of life."
"Yes. She was a disgrace to our community."
"You mean because she was gay?" Faith asked and the man looked at her, surprised.
"That's a part of it," he admitted.
"What a load of crap," Cordelia said.
The man looked at her, slowly getting hostile.
"You are not wanted here," he said, trying to look intimidating, but Faith and Cordelia just gave him a blank look. "I want you to leave. Now."
"I don't give a rat's ass about what you want," Faith said. "Ballet was our family and we came to pay our respects. You have a problem with that, well, tough. Now, if you'll excuse us, we'd like to do this in private. Scram," she said and gave him a cold look when he wanted to object.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Cordelia said when he started to raise his hand, giving him a hostile look.
The man looked from Faith to Cordelia, confused, but the looks in their eyes told him that they were serious. And besides, it wouldn't do him well if he hit a girl. He stared at them for a while and then left.
"Can you believe it?" Faith said. "The nerve."
"Calm down," Cordelia said and caressed her. "He's an asshole, forget him."
Faith looked at her and smiled.
"You're right. Assholes are not worth thinking about."
"Definitely not."
They turned back to the grave.
"Em, does anyone know any prayers?" Dennis asked.
"Well, no," Cordelia said. "I don't think anyone of us is very religious." She frowned. "Though we probably should be."
"I don't think so," Faith said.
"Why not?" Cordelia asked.
Faith shrugged.
"Because I think Goddess has enough ass-kissers to worry about."
Cordelia and Dennis laughed.
"You're probably right," Cordelia agreed.
"Okay, I'll give it a try," Dennis said.
"You know a prayer?" Faith asked, surprised.
"Well, no. I didn't mean to say a prayer, just, you know, talk to Ballet. From what I've experienced so far, I think she just might hear us."
"Oh. Okay, go ahead."
Dennis nodded and turned to the grave.
"Em, hi," he started. "Sorry we weren't there when you died. We never got around to tell you how much you meant to us. You meant a lot. You were our family, our older sister, and we turned to you when we needed comfort or someone to listen to. You tried to help us get our lives in order, but most of us were too screwed up. Still, you saved our lives. You respected us and you made us feel like we weren't complete wastes. And even though we didn't know it back then, you taught us a lot of important things, things we're only now starting to appreciate. The two of us here, who managed to get our lives back in order, owe it in large part to you. Thank you." He paused for a moment. "Amen."
"Amen," the two girls said in unison.
"That was nice," Cordelia said.
"Yes," Faith agreed. "I hope she heard you."
"Yes."
"I guess we'll never know," Dennis said and put his rose on the grave, next to the bouquet.
The two girls did the same.
They stood quietly, staring at the grave, Faith and Dennis thinking about their time with Ballet, Cordelia remembering Faith's memories.
"Ready to go?" Faith asked after a while.
"Sure," Dennis said and Cordelia nodded.
"Then let's go, before the natives gang up on us."
Dennis laughed.
"Hey, look," Cordelia said and pointed at a girl a few years younger than them, who was hiding in the bushes. "What was Ballet's sister's name again?"
"Judith," Dennis said.
Cordelia slowly approached the girl.
"Are you Judith?" she asked her.
The girl nodded, afraid of them. Cordelia smiled.
"Hi, I'm Cordelia. You're Ballet's, I mean, Anna's, sister, right?"
Judith nodded again.
"Why don't you come out of there? We won't tell anyone we saw you here."
Judith hesitated for a few moments and then came out.
"Did you put those flowers on her grave?" Faith asked.
Judith looked at her, still uncertain, and nodded.
Faith smiled.
"Good. At least someone around here still cares."
"You miss your sister?" Dennis asked.
Judith nodded.
"Yes. She wrote letters and she came to visit me for my birthdays."
"And your parents didn't find the letters?" Faith asked.
Judith shook her head.
"No. The postman left them at a secret place."
"Oh. Smart."
"She missed you, you know," Dennis said. "I mean, she missed the whole family, but she missed you the most. Hell, you're the only one she talked about," he said and Judith smiled. "You can be proud of her."
"You bet," Faith agreed. "Ballet was very special."
"Why are you calling her Ballet?" Judith asked, curious.
Faith smiled.
"Well, everyone in our little gang had a nickname and hers was Ballerina, because she loved to dance and she danced like a ballerina. But we shortened it to Ballet."
"Oh."
"And no matter what your family says about her, she was a good person, better than this entire town put together. She saved our lives and she took care of us. She was like a big sister to us."
"Yes," Dennis agreed.
"Do you know why she was banished?" Cordelia asked.
"Yes, for amoral behavior."
"Well, don't listen to them," Faith said. "Sure, she was gay, but there's nothing wrong with that."
"What does that mean?" Judith asked.
"What?" Faith asked, puzzled.
"Gay."
"Oh. It means she preferred girls to boys."
Judith gave her a puzzled look.
"You know how boys and girls usually come together and then marry? Like your parents?" Faith asked, trying to explain, and Judith nodded. "Well, Ballet, I mean, Anna, she preferred girls that way."
Judith thought for a moment.
"Oh," she then said, blushing a bit.
"That's perfectly okay. As a matter of fact, Cordelia and I are a couple."
"You are?" Judith asked and looked from Faith to Cordelia and back.
"Yes. I mean, sure, we both like boys, but we love one another. And there's nothing wrong with that, no matter what anyone says."
"Hold on," Cordelia said and ran back to the car.
"Where'd she go?" Dennis asked.
Faith shrugged.
"I don't know." She looked at Judith. "Em, if you want, we can write. You know, we tell you what we know of B… Anna and you tells us what you know."
"That's a good idea," Dennis agreed, nodding.
Judith thought about it.
"Okay," she agreed.
Faith smiled.
"Great."
"Okay," Cordelia said as she returned. She took a couple of deep breaths. "Here," she said and gave Judith a piece of paper. "That's our addresses and our phone numbers, in case you wanna talk or if you need help."
Faith smiled.
"You read my mind. We were just asking her if she'd like us to correspond."
"Really?"
"Yes. She said yes."
"Okay." Cordelia looked at Judith. "We already have your address. I mean, do you want us to write you to that address?"
Judith nodded.
"Yes. The postman will hide the letters for me."
"Okay."
"People are coming," Dennis warned them.
Faith and Cordelia looked.
"Okay, Judith, you better hide." Faith smiled. "It was nice finally getting to know you."
Judith smiled back.
"You too," she said.
"Go now."
Judith nodded and disappeared into the bushes.
"Are we leaving now?" Cordelia asked.
"Yes. I don't feel like kicking some poor Amish ass."
Cordelia smiled.
"Let's go then."
They slowly started walking toward their car, hoping the Amish wouldn't cause problems.
"Are we coming back next year?" Cordelia asked as they drove back to Sunnydale.
Dennis and Faith looked at one another.
"Yeah, it'd be nice," Faith said.
Dennis nodded.
"Yes. But we better be more inconspicuous."
"Yeah."
"So, the party's next week then?"
Faith grinned and glanced at Cordelia.
"Yep."
"It better be one hell of a party since there's only gonna be one instead of two."
Faith and Cordelia glanced at one another, smiling.
"I'm sure it's gonna be a great party," Cordelia said. "Especially the part after the party."
"Cordelia!" Faith said and mock glared at her.
Cordelia smiled at her.
"What?" she asked innocently and batted her eyelashes.
"I don't think Heidi's gonna appreciate you giving Dennis material for his wet dreams."
"Oh, I'm sure he can control his sex drive," Cordelia said, glancing at Dennis in the rear-view mirror. "Unlike Xander."
Faith chuckled.
"You got a point there."
"Of course." She smirked. "But there's no reason we can't already try it tonight."
"Cordelia!"
Dennis shook his head, smiling.
"You two are walking hormone bombs," he said, and the lovers laughed.
The End
