I first read Anne Rice’s book, Interview with the Vampire, in 1993. The book spawned my fascination with the vampire. I have proceeded to read every book in her popular Vampire Chronicles series as well as many other books in the same genre. I have always been searching for another book that could be as completely satisfying as I found Interview with the Vampire. I did not find a book until I began to read Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Where Rice had covered every aspect of the vampire in a educated and comprehensible way, Dracula took all that I had learned and spun a horror ridden tale with the previously romantic fibers. I had then seen the idea of the vampire portrayed in two very different ways. The more I read the more I began to compare. This essay is merely an extension of my thoughts over the past few years. For whatever reason, the fascination with the vampire stayed with me, and prompted me to compose an essay comparing the different aspects of vampire fiction. It is, undoubtedly, a subject I have studied simply by reading the literature. It seemed appropriate that my musings finally be realized on paper.
