The Plane of Imprisonment

Imprisioneria, an artificial quasi-plane developed hundreds of years ago by some of the most powerful arch-mages in the Realms, has been the home of thousands of imprisoned criminals, undesirables, and falsely accused people since anyone can remember.  Little is known about it, the knowledge to send prisoners to it and its origins having been lost.  It is a mystery to some, a potential adventure to others.  Others still tell stories of relatives or friends from far back that were sent there.  What few know, however, it that the plane is alive and well, and prospering.  The few that once made up its population have become many, and there is a diverse civilization there that has grown from what was once only a place to throw out the trash.

As of late, interest in the prison plane has resurfaced.  Rumors of treasure, magic, and power beyond comprehension abound.  It isn't surprising.  Most things that defy comprehension gain that kind of reputation.

A prisoner from the plane recently escaped.  No one is sure how the feat was accomplished, nor is the escapee quick to explain.  He has sworn to keep the secret and will die before revealing it.  What he did reveal is that there is a great deal of turmoil in the plane and that it would be wise to make some kind of effort to put everything to right.  Whatever that might be, the Realms is not to know any time soon.  The kingdoms are in diliberation over the issue, and the time has come for the true powers of the Realms to step up to the challenge: the adventurers.
