Biography

I am a type 2 diabetic on diet and exercise control only. I was diagnosed just three weeks before I became pregnant in August 1999. As a function of my pregnancy, I started injecting insulin on September 16, 1999 and stopped on May 3, 2000 when my daughter, Genevieve Lynn was born.

I've lost a grand total of 60lbs so far -- 30lbs while I was pregnant. And I've gained some of that back and lost it again.

When I became pregnant, at first, I didn't think to put my sugars on the web, but then I thought it might be useful. You'll find that my entries start adding a table of my daily glucose levels in early September. For a pregnant diabetic, my sugars were supposed to be 80-95 fasting in the morning before breakfast and 95-130 after breakfast. Between 130-140, my doctor got a little nervous, but not worried and higher than 140, I screwed up my food or my insulin was lacking. Usually, it was my screw up. I went through one week where my sugars went nuts and I needed an increase of insulin of nearly 10 units...it was a rough week. For the most part, I had minor increases of 2 units or so per week or two and the occasional nutty week of hormone changes that meant raised sugars and raised insulin levels.

Currently, I'm a pretty healthy diabetic, and am continuing to work to lose weight under my doctor's supervision, through a combination of sticking to a 1800-2000 calorie per day diet, regular exercise and nursing my daughter. Exercise lately, hasn't been so easy, though, so my weight has been yo-yoing upwards.

It should be noted that I am continuing to nurse my perfectly healthy daughter, even as she nears her first birthday, which means my calorie requirements are still a bit higher than usual.

Much love,
Wendy
