Well, I haven't talked to much of anyone about this, but I am today.
There is a woman, who I've mentioned before that's on my kids mailing list. She's a crazy woman we'll call Weirdo. She's one of those kinds of people you could see being related to the Addam's Family. I avoid her a lot because I'm simply not comfortable dealing with that combination of craziness and poor parenting. Well, she's also pregnant and due several months after me. She has been torturing our list with every conceivable thing about her pregnancy. Granted, I torture people here with it, but I figure if you show up here, you're willing to endure it. This list is NOT supposed to be for every aspect of her pregnancy, but rather for her older 6 year old child, but yet she persists in posting these huge cumbersome posts that just make you want to hurl. I've gotten to the point to where the other night, I simply just started filtering her mail to the trash, so I never have to read it. What a remarkably freeing experience! Well, recently, she just discovered she's having a boy and horror of horrors, she decided to name him Jackson. Okay, I know I'm hormonally challenged, but that seemed like pretty blatant name stealing to me because everyone on the group had asked me to explain how we were going to pronounce Jaxana. One of the other women said, she probably wasn't aware she was doing it, which is probably true, but it doesn't change that I'd feel my beautiful little girl would forever be associated with Weirdo in some way and that grosses me out. I feel very strongly about the power of names. A lot of people don't agree with me, but that's their thing. I think that the names of children are very important and that you have to consider so much when naming someone or something, that it's important to consider all of the associations that you'll have with the name you'll be using for the rest of their lives. I wouldn't want to bring up a Weirdo-to-child association every time I uttered my child's name. So yesterday, I went to the book store. I was specifically looking for Celtic names for children, but the bookstore didn't carry that, so I picked up a baby name book that had a lot of the names I'd admired in my travels that were off the beaten path. Last night, Mike and I started going through the book, called his Mom and finally came to Genevieve. Genevieve Lynn. Genevieve is a variation on the name of Gwendolyn, who was Merlin's wife. I think I've read EVERYTHING about the Arthurian legends, so it really appeals to me. Mike's mom liked it, Bear liked it, and Mike and I like it. I'm simply NOT posting it on the kids group until she's born though. I'm sure if I did, Weirdo would suddenly decide her child had to be named Gene and I'd be forced to fly to where she lives and kick her in her Wierdo shins. |
