How this face thing got started

It started with the Viking I, it was sent to Mars to take many pictures of the suface. It actually mapped the entire planet. When NASA sat at the table to look at all those pictures one frame caught the eye of one of the scientist, it was frame 35A72 and it had captured the image of a face. This area of the planet is called the Cydonia Region. The group of scientist (including the famous Mars anomaly guru, Richard C. Hoagland) wrote the face off as a trick of light and shadows (even Hoagland agreed at the time). A Couple of guys, Vince DiPietro and Greg Molenaar, heard about this strange face formation from a spokesman who jokingly spoke of the face when the mars pictures were presented to the public. Vince and Greg later found the frame and did think that there was more to the face, so they ran the image through a gauntlet of photo enhancing computer programs, some of which they actually wrote themselves (Starburst Pixel Interleaving Technique SPIT ) specifically for the image(hows that for dedication). When they were done, they had quite a piece of work on there hands. He looked at them for a couple hours was totally convinced they were artifically constructed by a long ago died off martian race.
