MINNESOTA
State of My Birth
Home of My Heart

I recently moved to Texas from my home state of Minnesota. I like Texas, but my heart will always reside in Minnesota!
I wanted to share a little bit of how wonderful the northland is. Minnesota is called the land of 10,000 lakes. Actually, there are over 12,000 lakes of various sizes located there. These lakes were formed as glaciers slowly scraped along that section of the earth and filled with glacial water as they melted. Some of our lakes are spring fed.
Itasca State Park, in northern MN, is the headwaters of the Mississippi River. You can actually stand with one foot on each side of this mighty, moving, mass of water there (you have to have long legs!). Minneapolis, MN, is our largest city and is the home of the Mall of America and the Minnesota Zoo.
There is so much more but so limited space and I would rather show you just a few of the things that make Minnesota so dear to me.

Lets start with the state thingies! *smile*

The common loon is MN's state bird. They are abundant there and have the most hauntingly musical cry that carries for miles. It's wonderful to watch the chicks ride around on their mother's backs!

The state flower is the pink ladyslipper. They grow in swampy, boggy or wet forest areas. They grow slowly and can be found singly or in groups. I have only seen a few myself but can remember their beauty from my childhood. I extend my gratitude to Helen O'Brien for permission to use her fantastic photos of these lovely ladyslipper orchids!

There are many different species of birds in MN. My favorite is the bald eagle. On the endangered species list for many years, the bald eagle has made a come back with lots of help and the banning of DDT. They can be seen in many areas of MN; more abundant in the northern regions of the state. They can often be seen sitting on the ice on Lake Bemidji eating their catch.

The fishing is great too! Have yet to find walleye or northern for sale in Texas and most Texans have never tasted it. *sigh* A taste of MN I will miss dearly. There are also numberous
small pan fish to be taken such as sunfish, croppy, and perch but
nothing beats the taste of fresh walleye or northern pike!
ON TO THE FUN STUFF!!

This is Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe! The legend has it that the lakes of MN were formed from their footprints as they roamed this wooded land cutting timber. These statues reside on the lake shore of Lake Bemidji in Bemidji, MN, my home town. They can be found in many locations all over the US, but we had him first! LOL

MINNESOTA HUMOR
Now don't hate me you fellow Minnesotans! This is all in fun and I am the first to laugh at OTHER state's impressions of the frozen northland! I'm sure a great many of my viewers have seen the tongue in cheek comedy about MN, "Fargo". Think it's true? Ya shurrr! You betcha! LOL Not quite, but it goes a long way in lightening the mood on those cold winter nights! You know, when the snow is so high you have to roll on the surface because if you try to stand up you sink to your shoulders and can't move till spring thaw! *grin* Not so funny when it actually happens! LOL I know! I've done it a time or two. Enough said. Think I may already be in trouble!
