MATERIALS USED FOR BUTTERFLY & BRANCH:
17" X 26" Board
20" X 29" Fabric-felt or paint
322 1" Nails
40 1 1/2" Nails
11 yds. Thread - Leaves
Elmer's white glue 96 yds.
96 yds. Thread - Upper Wings
77 yds. Thread - Lower Wings
4 yds. Thread - Branch
DIRECTIONS:
Tape pattern to plywood. Make small indent where nails will be
drilled. Drill holes all the way through plywood. Use the
smallest drill bit you can find. Nails must not slip through
holes, they must be tight.
All threads on this design are worked counterclockwise around
all nails. Body uses large nails and fins use small nails.
Make all wraps on left side of butterfly counterclockwise amd all
wraps on right side of butterfly clockwise.
1. 1ST LAYER - UPPER LEFT WING "A":
Tie thread onto nail no. A-1, leaving a 4" length of thread free. Wrap
as follows,
skipping 21 nails between each wrap.

47-9 59-21
12-33 24-45 36-57
48-10
Return thread back to nail no. A-1 and tie off thread. Push completed
layer
down evenly to bottom of board.
2. 2ND LAYER - UPPER LEFT WING "A'
Tie thread onto nail no. A-1. Repeat above procedure, using starting
points
A-1 and A-19, skipping 18 nails between each wrap. Continue wrapping
until
you have two threads on each nail and have returned to the exact two
starting
points (A-1,A-19) from which you began. Tie off as before. Push this
layer
down 1/2" above board.
3. 3RD LAYER - UPPER LEFT WING "A"
Tie thread onto nail no. A-1. Repeat above procedure, using starting
points
A-1 and A-15, skipping 14 nails between each wrap. Continue wrapping
until
you have two threads on each nail and have returned to the exact two
starting
points (A-1, A-15) from which you began. Leave at top of nails.
4.1ST LAYER - LOWER LEFT WING "A"
Tie thread onto nail no. A-60 and wrap as follows, skipping 17 nails
between
each wrap:
60-78 66-84
72-90 78-96
84-102
61-79 67-85
73-91 79-97

62-80 68-86
74-92 80-98
86-104
63-81 69-87
75-93 81-99
87-105
64-82 70-88
76-94 82-100 88-106
65-83 71-89
77-95 83-101 89-60
After returning thread to nail no. A-60, tie off. Push layer down evenly
to bottom
of board.
5. 2ND LAYER - LOWER LEFT WING "A"
Tie thread onto nail no. A-60 and wrap as in step 4 using starting
points
A-60 and A-74, skipping 13 nails between each wrap, until reaching
nail no. A-60.
Tie off and push layer down 1/4" above board.
6. 3RD LAYER - LOWER LEFT WING "A"
Tie thread onto nail no. A-60 and wrap as in step 4 using starting
points
A-60 and A-71, skipping 10 nails between each wrap, until reaching
nail A-60.
Tie off and leave this layer at top of nails.
7. UPPER AND LOWER RIGHT WINGS "B"
Repeat steps 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 on "B" nails.
8. WING SPOTS - LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS
Tie thread onto nail C-1 and wrap as follows:
1-5 4-8
7-11 10-14
13-2
2-6 5-9
8-12 11-15
14-3
3-7 6-10 9-13
12-1
Return to nail C-1 and tie off. Leave layer at top of nails.
9. BODY AND ANTENNA
The body and antenna are simply made by looping on both sides of nails.
Tie onto
nail no. A-60. Loop up to B-4 and completely around nail. Continue
this procedure,
looping up right side of nails B-3,B-2,B-1,B-59,B-58,B-54,B-56,107,108,109,
110.111,112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119 and 120. Repeat procedure down
left side of nails in same manner. Upon reaching nail number A-60,
loop up to
B-4 and across to A-4 and down and around B-60. Loop up left side of
body and antenna nails as above and back down right side. Tie off on nail
B-60.
Cut all threads 1/8" from knot and secure with glue.
BRANCH AND LEAVES
DIRECTIONS:
1. LEAVES: Each leaf is made using the same procedure. Tie thread
onto
nail no. 1 at base of leaf. Make all wraps counterclockwise. String
each nail,
in order, returning to base nail, no. 1 between each wrap. 1-2,1-3,1-4,1-5,
etc.
Repeat for second and third leaves.
2. STEM: Tie thread onto bottom nail of branch. Using the
"looping" technique,
loop up right side of main stem and back down left side of main stem.
Repeat
this procedure for each small side stem as well. Tie off. Cut all excess
threads
1/8" from nails. Add a dab of Elmer's white glue to each knot to secure.
If you have a problem with the "looping" technique, practice until
you think
it looks right.
