African elephant - Etosha, Namibia
The elephant often come to drink in the early morning at the waterholes at Etosha. While the lion may be king of the jungle, here the elephants have no patience with them - this bull elephant chased a lion off his kill and a white rhino from the water, so that he could enjoy a drink in peace. Note the radio tracker collar around the elephant's neck - the rangers track many of the elephants here for research purposes.

The game reserves of Natal are some of South Africa's least publicised treasures. Here a giraffe feeds from the top of a thorn tree, demonstrating the usefulness of having a lot of neck!

Cape Fur Seals, Cape Cross, Namibia
Cape Fur Seals are actually sea lions, distinguished from true seals by having ears. They live in huge colonies of Namibia and South Africa - this colony at Cape Cross is one of the more accessible. They lead a brutal existence - the pupping season at a large colony is a prime example of nature red in tooth & claw. I've chosen a gentler image for these pages.

This Bushbuck led me on a long and frustrating stalk before getting this picture. Normally shy and reclusive, they are difficult to photograph in the forest shadows when you do see them. This one was more used to humans, living near one of the world's great sights as he does - and eventually posed beautifully in a natural spotlight of sun through the rainforest canopy. bushbuck.jpg

Lioness, Etosha, Namibia
Lions always sleep. I'm not sure how they feed themselves, because they never move from under their trees. I watched her for about an hour - she looked so sleepy and relaxed - until she locked eyes with me. Then I remembered how lions feed themselves...

What can I say - it's a cute pig!
