FBI agent and US official visit survivors of Papua attack
An F-B-I agent and an American consular official have been visiting survivors of a
deadly ambush in the Indonesian province of Papua that have been flown to Australia
for treatment.
Two Americans and an Indonesian were killed in the attack near the giant
American-owned Freeport mine.
Eight of the wounded - including seven Americans and an Indonesian - were flown to
Townsville in north Queensland after the weekend attack.
U-S Embassy spokesman, Matt Conoley, says the F-B-I agent was sent to try to find
out what happened... while it's standard procedure for a consular official to visit under
the circumstances.
The Indonesian government has blamed separatist rebels for the attack.
The insurgents themselves have denied any involvement, and have accused the
military of being behind the killings.
The Human Rights group, Amnesty International, has demanded that an independent
team investigate the incident, saying the Indonesian Government has an obligation to
bring those responsible to justice.
