Indonesian Parliamentary Speaker jailed for three years
Indonesia's parliamentary Speaker, Akbar Tanjung, has been found guilty of corruption
and is to be jailed for three years.
Mark Bowling reports, the leader of the country's former ruling party was convicted of
misusing about eight million dollars:
"The money was from state funds allocated to feed the poor. Together with two
co-accused, Akbar Tanjung was found guilty of misusing the money, allegedly
diverting the funds to help promote his political party in the lead up to Indonesia's first
fully democratic election theee years ago. Akbar Tanjung looked solemn but
composed as judged passed the verdict. He denies any wrongdoing and will remain
free pending the outcome of an appeal. His two co-accused each received sentences
of 18 months."
